POSITION SUMMARY:
The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Acute Nurse Practitioner (ANP) is a member of the ECMO Program team. Under the supervision of the supervising Physician, he/she will provide expert clinical care to patients requiring ECMO support, collaborating with physicians, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. The ECMO ANP will conduct ECMO candidacy screenings, comprehensive assessments of ECMO patients, including physical examinations, review of medical history and test results, manage ECMO circuit interactions, develop and implement individualized care plans based on patient needs and ECMO status, collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure seamless and coordinated care, and ensure the safety and efficacy of the ECMO system.
POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the State of Texas, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse / Nurse Practitioner in the State of Texas
- Current BLS and ACLS
- ECMO certification within 6 months of hire
- CCRN certification preferred
JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
- Five (5) years of Critical Care experience
- Two (2) years ECMO experience
- Knowledgeable of ECMO physiology, pharmacology, and complications
- Knowledge of State, Federal, and JCAHO regulations.
- Familiarity with ELSO Registry content and functionality.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.
- Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in electronic health records and other computer systems.
Responsibilities:
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in the initiation, maintenance, and weaning of ECMO support.
- Provide comprehensive care of the ECMO patient including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management.
- Manage patient care through daily rounds, formulating care plans, placing orders, adjusting treatment plans, and performing various procedures.
- Monitor ECMO circuit parameters (e.g., flow, temperature, gas exchange) and adjust settings as needed.
- Manage anticoagulation and other medications related to ECMO therapy.
- Recognize and respond to ECMO-related complications, such as bleeding, clotting, or infection.
- Assist with bedside procedures, including cannulation, arterial line placement, and central line insertion.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the physician, including but not limited to drawing blood, administering medications, and monitoring vital signs.
- Provide education to patients and families regarding ECMO therapy and its implications.
- Obtain informed consent for ECMO procedures, addressing any ethical concerns or questions raised by patients or families.
- Serve as a resource for other healthcare professionals regarding ECMO management.
- Act as a liaison between the ECMO team, bedside nurses, intensivists, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring effective communication and coordination of care.
- Provide clinical nursing leadership through care coordination, teaching, mentoring, and facilitating multidisciplinary care.
- Perform ECMO candidacy screenings: ICU rounds and Hospital-wide Code Blue attendance
- Participate in ECMO team meetings and rounds.
- Participate in ECMO-related research and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to ECMO care, identifying areas for improvement and implementing best practices.
- Oversee staff training, equipment maintenance, supply needs, and data collection
- Oversee ECMO schedule and provide 24/7 staffing coverage.
- Conduct employee performance reviews
- Develop policies and procedures
- Stay current with the latest advancements in ECMO technology and best practices.
- Monitor program data collection and ensure accurate record keeping and data abstraction for the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry
- Serve as ECMO committee member

B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids).
