SCHEDULE

Regular Full-Time Position (Eve/Night)

Must be available from Sunday to Saturday at 2:00pm to 7:00am; rotating weekends.

Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.

HIRING RANGE

$36.00 to $43.72 hourly

Actual pay commensurate with experience

Eligible for Sign-on Bonus

JOB SUMMARY

1. Performs the day to day supervision of staff and routine operations for assigned area, under the direction of supervisor.

2. Assists supervisor with activities to support the company mission, vision and strategic goals.

3. Represents management and the company.

4. Specialist: Assigned area is restricted to specialty for which individual is licensed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs duties of Medical Technologist/Laboratory Technician, as required.

2. May perform phlebotomy as needed.

3. Assists supervisor to ensure operations of assigned area(s) meet company requirements and customer service goals.

a. Assists supervisor/manager in setting departmental standards of quality, productivity, performance and developing and implementing monitoring systems, as assigned.

b. Performs scheduling and work assignments according to operational requirements.

c. Participates in preparation and updating of procedures and other departmental manuals.

d. Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, and other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner.

e. Investigates and addresses incidents involving patients, employees, clients, visitors.

i. Handles situations using appropriate company policy or procedure.

ii. Consults supervisor or other appropriate resource.

f. Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.

g. Ensures the proper and efficient use of supplies and equipment.

h. Interfaces with clients and patients and provides feedback to Marketing staff or supervisor.

4. Assists supervisor to ensure assigned area(s) meet state, federal, and other regulatory requirement.

a. May implement and maintain quality control/assurance programs as required.

b. May serve as General Supervisor, Technical Consultant and/or Technical Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements. Refer to Laboratory Personnel and Licensure Requirements policy (QI- 11-PER-01) for performance assessment and regulatory responsibilities.

5. Assists in implementing plans within scope of responsibility to meet organization’s strategy

6. Participates in hiring, training, developing and appraising staff and makes recommendations as appropriate

a. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis in accordance with company policy.

b. Consults with supervisor and Human Resources as appropriate.

7. Keeps abreast of changes in industry, makes recommendations and assists with implementation of new or revised procedures.

8. Provides input and support for the development and implementation of improvements.

a. Identifies problems and opportunities.

b. Provides/analyzes appropriate data and information needed to make decisions.

c. Recommends solutions.

d. Makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).

e. Assists with implementation.

9. Participates, leads and facilitates meetings and teams

10. Ensures working environment that provides maximum safety and health and encourages safety awareness among employees.

a. Ensures that employees perform duties using safe work techniques and procedures in accordance with OSHA, State and Federal regulations and DLS policies and procedures.

b. Reports unsafe work conditions, injuries/illnesses and incidents in a timely and proper manner.

11. Develops, promotes and maintains a positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

12. Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures.

13. Participates in continuing education/in-service programs and in management and laboratory administration related courses.

14. Models the behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and shared values of the organization.

15. Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with company policies and procedures.

16. Performs other duties as required.

17. Satellites and Guam

a. Maintains assigned site(s) to project a professional, quality image to clients and patients.

b. If courier or shipping function exists at assigned site(s), provides direction and monitors performance of applicable personnel.

18. QMC Punchbowl Blood Bank

a. May oversee Perioperative services and ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.

i. Provides on-going education and training and keeps abreast of changes to procedures, policies and equipment.

ii. Serves as a liaison between QMC and accrediting/regulatory agencies.

b. Works with Anesthesiologist, anesthesia techs, transplant nurses, OR Manager for changes in procedures and policies or equipment. Attends morning huddles prior to procedures as needed.

c. Works with anesthesia tech to collect and run QC samples from cellsavers

d. Works with Tissue Bank nurse and monitors temperature charts and variance reports.

e. Ensures that competency assessments are completed and documented.

f. Provide statistical data on perioperative procedures and tissue banking implantations for quarterly Blood Utilization Committee meetings.

g. Works with OR Biomed technician assigned to perioperative to ensure equipment maintenance, validation and initial training records are documented and available for review.

19. May perform other data collection and reporting duties.

a. Collects statistics from Punchbowl and other blood banks and prepare PowerPoint presentation for pathologist on a quarterly basis.

b. Collects and analyzes blood bank transfusion data from Carelink reports on an ad- hoc basis.

JOB DEMANDS

Communication Demands:

· Able to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations, as appropriate.

· Able to write routine reports and correspondence.

· Able to speak effectively before groups of internal and external customers.

· May require oral reports and presentations to employees and/or management

Typical Physical Demands:

· Requires manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

· Able to distinguish and identify colors.

· Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coats, face shields, respirator, etc.

· Able to lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to thirty-five (35) pounds occasionally.

· Able to stand, sit, bend and key up to six (6) hours intermittently.

· Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.

· Depending on work location:

o Able to walk up to six (6) hours frequently.

o Able to drive and get in/out of company vehicle up to six (6) hours frequently.

o Requires occasional ground or air travel.

Typical Working Conditions:

· Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.

· Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

· Medical Laboratory Technician: Associate degree in medical laboratory technology/technician from an accredited institution.

· Medical Technologist: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.

· Additional requirements may be needed for those serving as General Supervisor, Technical Consultant or Technical Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements.

Experience:

· Four (4) years as an MLT, or two (2) years as an MLT plus one (1) year of supervisory experience, with continuing education in one or more disciplines within the laboratory; OR

· Three (3) years as a Medical Technologist/Specialist, or two (2) years as an MT/Specialist plus one (1) year of supervisory experience, with continuing education in one or more disciplines within the laboratory.

· As applicable: Two years of laboratory training and/or experience in high complexity testing in the designated specialty(ies) of service for which the person is responsible and 6 months of experience in high complexity testing for the designated subspecialty(ies) of service.

Certification:

Hawaii:

· Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

Guam:

· Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

· Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification preferred.

Saipan

· Certification (as mentioned above) preferred.

Hawaii: Exemption - "Current DLS personnel who were licensed as a Technologist, Specialist or Technician by the State of Hawaii prior to the effective date of Hawaii Administrative Rules 11- 110 (October 19, 2002)."

Licensure:

Hawaii: State license as a Technologist, Technician, or Specialist as appropriate.

Skills:

· Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbal and written form.

· Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.

· Excellent customer service skills.

· Effective coaching skills.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar application.

· Ability to work in a fast pace and high-volume environment.

· Knowledge of quality assurance practices and procedures.

· Familiar working with a Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Other Qualifications:

As applicable:

· If required to drive a company vehicle, a valid driver’s license (full license, not provisional or intermediate) and current acceptable traffic abstract is required.

· Positions performing bench coverage in the Blood Bank department must possess a current Hawaii State license as a Medical Technologist unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.
