RESEARCH & TEST ENGINEER

Overview :

Diakon Solutions is adding several new positions to assist the Federal Aviation Administration’s Aviation Research Division at the William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace in New Jersey.

These are ‘hands-on’ engineering positions to support research and testing for the general aviation sector in the areas of alternative fuels and next generation, low-emissions aircraft technologies, including electric, and hybrid-electric propulsion.

The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting a wide range of research and test activities. Depending on the specific position this may include but is not limited to : test cell equipment integration; engine / propulsion system and sub-component test article installation and configuration; test article monitoring and maintenance activities; configuration and maintenance of test cell equipment including altitude simulation systems; fuel system setup and fuel handling; participate in and or lead  test conduct in accordance with approved test plans and practices; and reduction and analysis of test data, along with supporting technical report preparation. Individuals may be called upon to communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to management, the aviation and aerospace industries and other external parties. Selected candidates will also perform various other supporting activities as assigned.

In addition to the specific job requirements below, all candidates should have experience with

  • Hands-on technical work including practical knowledge of how piston engines, mechanical, and / or electrical systems operate as applicable to the specific position.
  • Must be able to exercise an independent degree of judgment, ingenuity, and creativity interpreting and adapting procedures and practices.
  • Ability to easily navigate computer programs and learn new programs and software as necessary.

ALTERNATIVE FUELS LEAD ENGINEER

In addition to the above general duties, the selected candidate will specifically assist the Senior Engineer in leading FAA core research and testing of alternative unleaded fuels for use in piston-engine aircraft, as well as aircraft and engine modifications to allow safe operation on reduced octane unleaded fuels. This includes independently leading and as required, directing other team members in test activities. Will also be responsible for assisting the FAA maintain its test cell systems, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements : A Bachelor of Science Degree in either electrical, aerospace, or mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college. At least seven years of related experience with at least five of which must involve performing engineering research and testing, and one year of testing involving aviation engines. Experience writing and debugging LabVIEW, MATLAB or other equivalent software. Knowledge in aviation certification offices, policies, procedures, and documents helpful. A Master’s Degree may be substituted for two years of experience.

Salary : $110,000 - $120,000

ALTERNATIVE FUELS INTERMEDIATE ENGINEER

In addition to the above general duties, the selected candidate will specifically assist the Senior and Intermediate Engineers in conducting core research and testing of alternative unleaded fuels for use in piston-engine aircraft as well as aircraft and engine modifications to allow safe operation on reduced octane unleaded fuels. This includes coordinating with other team members in test activities, and leading specific tests as directed. Will also be responsible for assisting the FAA maintain its test cell systems, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements : A Bachelor of Science Degree in either electrical, aerospace, or mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college. At least five years of related experience, with at least three of which must involve performing engineering research and testing. Experience writing and debugging LabVIEW, MATLAB or other equivalent software. Knowledge in aviation certification offices, policies, procedures, and documents helpful. A Master’s Degree may be substituted for two years of experience.

Salary : $85,000 - $95,000

ALTERNATIVE FUELS ASSOCIATE ENGINEER

In addition to the above general duties, the selected candidate will specifically support the FAA’s core research and testing of alternative unleaded fuels for use in piston-engine aircraft; aircraft and engine modifications to allow safe operation on reduced octane unleaded fuels; and innovative aircraft technologies that safely reduce emissions from fuels.

Requirements : A Bachelor of Science degree in either aerospace, or mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college. One year of experience performing engineering research and development testing including data acquisition and technical writing experience preferred. A related Master’s Degree may be substituted for the experience requirement. Experience utilizing either / or SOLIDWORKS or MATLAB, and experience post-processing large data sets helpful.

Salary : $65,000 - $75,000

ELECTRIC PROPULSION ASSOCIATE ENGINEER

In addition to the above general duties, the selected candidate will support the FAA’s research and testing Team in the areas of electric, hybrid-electric, and other next generation, low-emissions aircraft propulsion technologies for general aviation. This may include entire propulsion systems or individual components.

Requirements : A Bachelor of Science Degree in either electrical, aerospace, or mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college. At least one year of experience working in a technical field related to mechanical and electrical systems, or engineering research and development. A related Master’s Degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.

The candidate must have a sound knowledge of how electricity works including current, voltage, capacitance, inductance, and preferably battery systems. Preferably, candidates will also have a knowledge of electrical components and experimental test setups.
