The Patient Collections Specialist is responsible for all functions related to the collection of payment on accounts with open patient balances. They are responsible for working directly with patients to help them understand their statement and financial responsibility related to dialysis services. They offer flexible payment options and make payment arrangements to resolve open balances. The Patient Collections Specialist provides excellent and compassionate customer service during every patient encounter.
Responsibilities:
Patient Outreach and Collections (45%):
- Manages all outstanding patient balances and reaches out to patients when balances become past due per company policy.
- Provides patients with all payment options available to help resolve open balances.
- Establishes payment plans per company policy.
- Collects updated insurance information, if applicable, and ensures the account is updated and rebilled if necessary.
- Reviews accounts for possible collections and makes recommendation to supervisor/manager.
Customer Service (45%):
- Answers all incoming inquiries from patients. Addresses questions and/or concerns regarding statements, open balances, payment options, and payments arrangements.
- Returns patient calls including voicemails by the end of the next business day.
- Documents all calls timely and accurately in the patients’ account in the billing system.
- Represents the company well by demonstrating kindness, compassion and professionalism in all patient encounters.
Patient Statements (10%):
- Generates monthly patient statement runs and manages statement cycles.
- Updates patient demographics as needed to ensure statements are sent with accurate information.
- Documents returned mail and updates mailing addresses.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- 3 years minimum patient collections experience in a medical billing setting.
- 2 years minimum working in a dialysis patient collections setting preferred.
- Dialysis billing software experience preferred.
- Knowledge of how to read an Explanation of Benefits (EOB).
- Understanding of patient responsibility including copay, coinsurance and deductible.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Proficient Customer Service skills.
- Ability to multi-task in a high-volume work environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Maintains confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
