Job Summary: The Estimator will play a key role in the preconstruction phase, analyzing project plans and specifications, preparing accurate cost estimates, and supporting bid proposals for heavy civil infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate has a strong background in heavy civil estimating and is skilled in quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and collaboration with project managers, subcontractors, and clients to ensure competitive and thorough bids.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Estimating: Analyze project documents, specifications, and requirements to prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, and equipment on heavy civil projects such as roads, bridges, earthworks, and utilities.
- Quantity Takeoffs: Perform precise quantity takeoffs for all components of the project, using estimating software and industry-standard methodologies.
- Cost Analysis: Evaluate costs based on labor, materials, and equipment, factoring in project location, duration, and any unique conditions. Research and incorporate current market rates for materials and subcontractor pricing.
- Bid Preparation: Prepare comprehensive and competitive bid proposals for submission to clients. Review bids with senior management to ensure accuracy, competitiveness, and compliance with company goals.
- Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks associated with the project and include contingency measures in the bid. Provide insights into potential cost savings or value engineering options.
- Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to gather and validate project details. Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to obtain up-to-date pricing.
- Bid Reviews & Adjustments: Review all estimates before submission to ensure accuracy. Make adjustments based on client feedback, historical data, and team input.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of all bid documents, estimates, and correspondence. Provide regular reports to management on bidding progress and outcomes.
- Market Research: Stay informed of market trends, materials pricing, and competitor bidding strategies to ensure competitive and accurate estimates.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction projects, including roadways, bridges, excavation, utilities, or similar.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred, though equivalent experience may be considered.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in estimating software (such as HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to perform accurate takeoffs and interpret complex engineering drawings.
- Attention to Detail: Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy in calculations and project analysis.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with team members, vendors, and clients.
- Organizational Skills: Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to anticipate challenges, assess risks, and recommend solutions to ensure competitive and accurate estimates.
- Certifications: Certification from AACE, ASPE, or other relevant estimating organizations is a plus.
