This professional nursing role manages the coordination of nutrition services within the WIC program and supervises its staff. Strong communication skills are essential, as there will be close collaboration with KDHE staff for program implementation. Additional responsibilities may include public health duties such as immunizations, immunotherapy, child and adult health nursing initiatives, communicable disease investigations, elevated blood lead investigations, organizing community baby showers, and other tasks as assigned by the health department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Comply with all countywide and departmental policies and procedures.
- Strong oral communications skills required to perform routine administrative duties such as responding to inquiries from telephone or visitors.
- Implement policies and procedures of the State WIC program necessary to provide services to eligible county residents at the health department and at the satellite clinic.
- Provide technical assistance and direction to WIC staff.
- Oversee the scheduling of new certification and subsequent certification appointments.
- Provide nutritional and health assessment of clients with appropriate education and referral, including substance abuse and breast feeding.
- Coordinate client referral for dietician and assist with appropriate education plans.
- Perform related nursing skills including physical measurements and hemoglobin for WIC clients.
- Document client information into the KWIC computer system.
- Report and summarize progress and activities at regular intervals, prepare periodic and special reports.
- Assist with budget planning for WIC services.
- Maintain equipment and submit order of supplies used in the WIC clinic area.
- Establish relationship with other community agencies and professionals for referrals.
- Coordinate WIC nutrition services into other services, such as immunization programs.
- Review current literature to update knowledge on topics pertinent to job.
- Monitor clients whom are receiving tuberculosis medication, provide appropriate follow up and education when needed.
- Maintain client records according to state pharmaceutical regulations.
- Refer children for further evaluation and/or treatment when necessary.
- Provide immunizations, immunotherapy, b/p checks, weight checks, TB skin testing, TB reads, and head lice checks as needed.
- Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION
One to three years of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas or have a temporary permit to practice issued by the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
Valid Kansas Driver’s License
