14. PATROL DEPUTY
Summary: - Under general supervision, is responsible for law enforcement work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of Work: This position performs law enforcement work on an assigned shift. This is the entry level position in the Deputy Sheriff sub-series of positions. This position enforces pertinent provisions of the Tennessee Code Annotated and Federal Law on an assigned shift and in the county patrol area. This position is supervised by the Patrol Sergeant.
Examples of Work: 1. Patrol county roads and all areas of the county in protection of life, limb and property; enforces laws relating to the use of motor vehicles; as necessary assists at traffic accidents and performs traffic investigations; answers varied calls for assistance and service; handles law enforcement duties related to any misdemeanor or felony violations; investigates criminal activity; makes lawful arrests; issues traffic tickets and misdemeanor citations.
2. Prepare a variety of reports and written materials for offenses, arrests, investigations, incidents and other law enforcement related matters.
3. Serve civil process, criminal warrants, and other legal papers. 4. Testify in court proceedings.
5. Transport prisoners to court, prison, hospital, doctor, dentist and other institutions, places and persons as required.
6. Operate and/or use a variety of law enforcement related equipment including but not limited to patrol car, handgun, riot shotgun, asp, Top Cop chemical agent, camera, breathalyzer, two-way radio, restraining devices, telephone, fax, copier, computer.
7. Handle dangerous situations in which serious injury or death may be a factor.
Minimum Qualifications: 1. Training and Experience - A high school diploma, GED or any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
2. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills - Ability to learn and apply pertinent laws, rules, regulations and general principles and practices of law enforcement. Ability to handle dangerous situations with a minimum of force.
Necessary Special Qualifications: - All qualifications as stipulated in pertinent provisions of the Tennessee Code Annotated and all other applicable laws, rules and regulations shall be met. Possession of a valid Tennessee operator’s license is required.
