Regional Safety Manager

Independence Excavating is looking for an accomplished and ambitious Regional Safety Manager to join our growing team. As a Regional Safety Manager, you will manage all aspects of safety for assigned projects, including continuously building a safety culture, develop training, ensure compliance, and align with the safety standard of our organization. This position will report to the Director of Safety.

A Regional Safety Manager is responsible for various functions including, but not limited to:

  • Promote and Encourage safe work standards and foster a safety-conscious culture among all team members
  • Together with the Safety Director and Senior Management staff, develop corporate project health and safety policies, safety management plans and standards. Ensure it is aligned with the Independence Excavating safety management system and delivery approach
  • Define local statutory and regulatory requirements and communicate to the Safety Director. Compile project specific health and safety set up documentation aligned with the Independence Excavating corporate health and safety manual
  • Participate/ collaborate/ support project incident investigations and reporting. Help lead in the development of lessons learned
  • The Regional Safety Manager is responsible for assisting the Safety Director and Regional Managers in the planning of standard operating procedures (SOPs) as well as updating when relevant. Developing an evaluation method to assess program strengths and identify areas for improvement
  • Report deficiencies of safety programs to the Safety Director and other Senior Management staff for review
  • Participate in administering safety training to field teams both on and offsite when necessary
  • Assist the Safety Director with the development of a Safety Department goals
  • Work on strategy with the Marketing and HR teams to expose the "behind the scenes" efforts of our safety team members not only to our clients, but also more importantly to our most valuable customers and our own employees
  • Function as a project facilitator assisting the team as requested by the Safety Director
  • Ensure Site Safety Specialists or Field Safety Specialists assist field teams in day-to-day planning
  • Assure that Project Managers are storing and retaining all applicable safety documents in the project folders
  • Must have strong organizational skills in order to handle the variety of tasks assigned
  • Develop positive working relationships with Independence Excavating Project Managers and Field Engineers
  • Build, track, and analyze tasks assigned by Safety Director or Senior Management
  • Understand project documents thoroughly, including plans, specs, and scope
  • Must be able to prepare documents that present a concise and logical point of view
  • Safety Knowledge - Must be intimately familiar with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Knowledge of OSHA personnel, policies, procedures, and programs
  • Occupational Knowledge - Knowledge of heavy civil construction
  • Technical Capability - Familiar with modern computer and communication systems
  • Communication Proficiency – Must be comfortable public speaking, detail oriented, organized and able to prioritize
  • Ability to work independently and create a schedule based on risk and logistical practicability
  • Able to manage and coordinate multiple direct reports, along with managing their responsibilities

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Safety Management or equivalent
  • 5-10 years of relevant safety experience in heavy civil construction
  • OSHA 30 Required
  • First Aid/CPR Required
  • Must be energetic to continually learn more about construction, industry-related safety, and keeping our workers safe
  • This job is physically demanding, and prospects must be able to stand/walk for long periods of time. Some job sites may require working in environments that can be very uncomfortable
  • Prospects must be able to work on project sites in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to communicate with direct reports, field workers and field managers and upper management
  • Has the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Willingness and ability to manage responsibilities and time of both you and direct reports according to the requirements of each job site
  • Supervision or leadership experience a must

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bilingual (Spanish Speaking) a plus
  • OSHA 500
  • BCSP Certification (CSP, CHST Desired)
  • First Aid/ CPR Train the Trainer
  • ATSSA Work Zone Trainer
