Critical Tasks

  • Directly supervises the laboratory tech’s at all UNHS sites for scheduling, hiring, discipline, timesheets, evaluations and competencies: following the guidance of the UNHS Laboratory Medical director and the Laboratory Technical Consultant as well as the executive administration and Human Resources.
  • Direct training of technologists and laboratory assistants
  • Identifies training needs and ensures regular in-service training and education.
  • Available by on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation
  • Selection of test methodology as approved by Clinical Consultant and/or Laboratory Director
  • Verification of test procedures and the establishment of the laboratory’s test performance characteristics.
  • Performs and oversees Proficiency Testing
  • Resolving technical problems and ensuring remedial actions are taken, ensuring that patient results are not reported until corrective actions are taken
  • Maintaining Quality Assurance Program
  • Day-to day supervision of Testing Personnel, Specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of test results.
  • Maintains records for patients, quality controls, proficiency testing, and quality assurance.
  • Follow all laboratory procedures established by the laboratory.
  • Report and document critical values per laboratory policy
  • Responsible for maintaining proper environmental controls
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance of equipment, Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.

Requirements

  • Performs and oversees waived and moderate analytic processes, and demonstrates competency according to established lab standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Operates, calibrates and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Performs and oversees quality control (QC) procedures and maintains QC records and documentation necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies.
  • Follows and oversees appropriate specimen collection, handling, transport, and recording procedures.
  • Processes data, verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory information system.
  • Correlates all UNHS Laboratories testing menu and procedures.
  • Trains new and current employees on procedures and policies.
  • Conduct meetings on needed but no less than quarterly to assist UNHS lab techs with any new items of business, training needs, compliance needs or any other items.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Metrics

  • Maintains competency in all areas.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and operations.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures in performing job duties.
  • Review laboratory policy and procedure manuals to remain current in operating guidelines.
  • Pass annual competency evaluations in each job responsibility.
  • Maintains report of adverse events with follow up as recommended by Laboratory Medical Director and Technical Consultant
  • Assist Laboratory Consultant during all CLIA or JACHO surveys that may take place.

In accordance with Navajo Nation and federal law, UNHS has implemented an Affirmative Actin Plan pursuant to the Navajo Preference in Employment Act.

The NPEA Has The Following Preferences

  • Enrolled Navajo (must have a CIB).
  • Applicant married to an enrolled Navajo and who has lived on the NN for more than a year.
  • Everyone else (all other tribes and non-Indians).

Experience, Training, And Qualifications Needed To Perform The Job

Associate's degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science or clinical laboratory science AND have at least 4 years of laboratory experience, in nonwaived testing. Managerial experience preferred

As a Tribal Organization the Utah Navajo Health System, Inc. (UNHS) treats patients with high risk and underlying chronic medical conditions. Therefore, UNHS requires its employees to show proof of immunization prior to their employment with UNHS or during their employment. Below is a list of immunizations/vaccinations required to be employed or to continue employment with UNHS.

The Immunizations/vaccinations Include But Not Limited To Following

  • MMR (Measles Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella): Documentation of two MMR vaccines (OR) Documentation of MMR titers.
  • Complete Hepatitis B vaccine series (3 doses), documented proof of titers indicating immunity, or a declination that may be signed upon arrival.
  • Proof of up-to-date PPD skin testing, if previously negative (OR) Proof of positive PPD skin test with the most recent chest x-ray and treatment history.
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap).
  • Varicella titers, history of varicella or varicella immunization series.
  • Influenza vaccine for the current year.
  • Any other vaccinations as requested.
