Job description summary:
The hospice aide’s primary responsibility is to provide compassionate care to the elderly and to terminally ill patients. Some of the job responsibilities include but are not limited to listening and conversing with the patient, helping them with grooming, and providing regular personal bedside care to ensure that their quality of life is as comfortable as possible.
Reports To: RN Case Manager
Essential Job responsibilities & functions:
1. Attending to the patient’s personal hygiene including bathing, oral care, nails, and hair grooming
2. Helping the patient to get dressed and undressed.
3. Feeding the patient, if necessary and ensuring that they drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
4. Shopping for patients, packing food items, and preparing meals. You may also have to do a few housekeeping duties.
5. Changing the bed linen regularly to ensure that hygiene standards are maintained.
6. Spending time talking to or reading to the patient during bedside visits.
7. Ensuring that in the final stages of life, the patient feels comfortable and free from pain, and they do not feel afraid to die.
8. Communicating with the patient’s partner, family, and friends in a compassionate and considerate manner about issues pertaining to death.
9. All other duties as assigned by the Clinical Director (DON)
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
1. Must have home health aide certificate in state that hospice company resides.
2. Communicating changes in the patient’s symptoms to the medical team.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills
4. A valid driver’s license and maintains own insurance and can provide own transportation.
5. Willingness to work flexible hours.
6. A caring compassionate heart, patience, and a respectful nature
7. Up to date knowledge of infection control and hygiene procedures.
