Summary / Objective of Position :
Deliver inspiring and interactive Creative Writing courses. As often as possible, integrate Diné and other Native Authors that cultivate students' unique voices and imaginative expression while fostering a passion for storytelling. Provide individualized support and mentorship to students, helping them refine their writing skills, explore various genres, and achieve their personal and academic writing goals. Foster a collaborative and inclusive classroom that encourages peer feedback, creativity, and a sense of community among aspiring writers. Stay current with trends and best practices in Creative Writing pedagogy in the field. Create opportunities for students to share their writing through readings, publications, and local literary events, promoting their work within the college and the broader community. When able, develop and implement curriculum that honors and integrates the Diné philosophy Sa'ah Naaghai Bik'eh Hozhoo, which emphasizes life in harmony with the natural world and the universe.
Description of Essential Functions of the Position :
- Teach a range of Creative Writing courses, with a specialization in creative non-fiction.
- Develop and revise course syllabi that reflect the diverse voices and cultural perspectives of the Navajo Nation.
- Evaluate student performance through assignments, workshops, and participation, providing constructive feedback to support their growth as writers.
- Provide one-on-one guidance and support to students, helping them navigate their writing projects, develop their craft, and achieve their academic and personal goals.
- Lead writing workshops that encourage peer critique, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas.
- Collaborate with local organizations and community members to promote literary events, readings, and workshops that highlight student work and engage with the broader community.
- Participate in faculty meetings, workshops, and training sessions to enhance instructional skills, stay current with best practices in composition teaching, and engage in scholarly activities.
- Engage in scholarly or creative research and pursue opportunities for publication.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and procedures and HLC regulations.
- Act as an advocate for the integration of Diné cultural perspectives in the writing curriculum.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
Minimum & Preferred :
MFA with specialization in nonfiction.Experience in teaching creative writing and composition at the college level.Knowledge :
In-depth understanding of composition theories and teaching methodologies, including knowledge of current trends and practices in writing instruction at both introductory and advanced levels and APA and MLA format.Proficiency in various assessment strategies and tools for evaluating student writing, including formative and summative assessments, rubrics, and reflective practices.Comprehensive understanding of different writing genres, styles, and formats, including academic, creative, and professional writing, to guide students in developing versatility in their writing.Knowledge of digital tools and technologies that enhance writing instruction and student engagement, including online learning platforms like Canvas LMS and writing software like Microsoft Word.Familiarity with research methodologies and scholarly practices in composition studies, including the ability to engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to the academic community.Skills :
Familiarity with various writing and collaboration applications, including Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and educational apps that enhance writing instruction and student interaction.Advanced knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, along with experience using virtual communication tools like Zoom and Microsoft Outlook for effective course delivery and student engagement.Ability to work effectively with colleagues across disciplines, contributing to a collaborative and supportive academic environment.Proficiency in designing and applying effective assessment tools and rubrics to evaluate student writing and measure learning outcomes.Abilities :
Organizational abilities for managing course logistics, including syllabus development, assignment tracking, and timely communication with students.Proficient in Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, and communication tools like Zoom and Microsoft Outlook, ensuring effective course delivery in both remote and face-to-face formats.Certification in Quality Matters for online course design, ensuring the delivery of high-quality remote learning experiences.Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and community organizations.Adapt teaching methods based on student feedback and learning needs, demonstrated by successful course modifications and improved student outcomes.Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel :
Set up and operate technology for both in-person and remote instruction, including computers, projectors, and video conferencing tools.Maintain a suitable workspace for remote teaching, including the setup of video and audio equipment.Willingness to travel to various campuses across the Navajo Nation, including driving long distances and navigating different terrains.Campus housing will be provided.Faculty must reside on campus.Other Requirement(s) :
