Duty Schedule:
Flexible, including some evenings and weekend hours, Sunday - Friday.
Summary/Objective of Position:
Under the general supervision of the Branch Librarian. This Library Assistant is responsible for performing duties that support activities in the successful operation of the academic library. The Library Assistant will support operations on a daily basis, such as: staffing the circulation desk and assisting patrons in accessing library materials and services. This position will assist in collecting and circulating library material through the Integrated Library System (ILS) and maintain patron records and conduct functions within the system. Book and material processing will be additional duties. Able to interact with library patrons.
Description of Essential Functions of the Position

25% Circulation:
- Staffs the circulation desk on an assigned schedule;
- Provides excellent customer service;
- Charges and Discharges library materials, issues library cards, update patron records;
- Maintenance of system patron records including fines, addresses, status;
- Provides access to course reserves;
- Assigns room reservations;
- Assists with printing services;
- Assigns patron to community computers and printing services.
25% Book Processing and Collection Maintenance:
- Perform book repair and other tasks necessary to ensure the efficient maintenance of circulating library materials.
- Assist in maintenance of print serials, physical media, including retention record maintenance, and shelving.
25% Library Usage:
- Assists students and patrons to use ILS and library collection;
- Answer general questions about library guidelines and procedures to access library material;
- Assist library patrons in using computers, equipment, and materials.
- Able to open and close the library to maintain operational hours.
15% Library Collection Maintenance:
- Shelving and shelf reading of library collections;
- Reorganizing of library collection;
- Perform book repairs and stamping;
- Applying library and security labels.
10% Projects and other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
Minimum:
- Associate's degree in Library Science, Liberal Arts, Social Science, Information Management, or a related field.
- 1 year of library experience and/or 1 year of customer service experience.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in General Studies, Library Science, or a related field.
- 2 years of library experience; 2 years of customer service experience.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of computer systems; Internet or worldwide web, MS Office, Teams, Zoom, Internet browsing platforms, email systems, any ILS or library systems.
- Knowledge of library-related automation systems or databases.
- Knowledge of library resources, materials, and equipment.
- Customer service skills.
- Working knowledge of different social media platforms.
Skills:
- Basic computer and software troubleshooting;
- Able to use MS Office platform;
- Ability to be detail-oriented and hands-on with physical material including books, labels, stamps, and office equipment.
- Able to use social media platforms effectively.
- Able to learn new technologies and software.
- Able to provide some basic reference to library services.
- Able to do repetitive and detailed work.
- Able to think problem-solve, troubleshoot, and adapt to stressful situations.
Abilities:
- Able to communicate effectively, orally and written.
- Able to operate a PC or relevant computer software and emerging technology.
Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:
- Standing for extended periods, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 30 lbs frequently.
- Bending, reaching, reaching overhead, stooping, kneeling.
- Work is performed in a typical office environment.

- Ability to speak Navajo but not required.
