Flexible. Monday-Friday. May include weekends. 20 (Academic Year) to 40 hours/week (Spring Break). No holiday or make-up hours.
Summary/Objective of Position:
Up to five (5) undergraduate students will be on the Uranium remediation research project. The Undergraduate Student Research Assistant (UG RA) position is a vital role in the uranium remediation project, aimed at addressing environmental challenges in the Navajo Nation. The UG RA will support the research team in sample collection, preparation, and processing tasks, contributing to field and laboratory activities focused on uranium contamination and its remediation. This position offers the student an opportunity to develop practical skills in environmental science, gain hands-on experience with advanced research methodologies, and engage in meaningful work that addresses critical issues affecting the community. Emphasizing experiential learning and professional growth, this role prepares the UG RA for future careers or academic pursuits in STEM fields, while fostering a commitment to environmental stewardship and community impact.

- Assist in sample collection during fieldwork, including adherence to safety protocols and proper handling of materials.
- Prepare and process samples for laboratory analysis, following established procedures and maintaining detailed records of activities.
- Perform data entry, organization, and basic analysis under the supervision of project leaders.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization, including the proper storage and labeling of materials and equipment.
- Collaborate with team members during field and laboratory activities to ensure project milestones and objectives are met.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
Minimum:
- Prior research experience, particularly in environmental science or laboratory settings.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with sample collection techniques, laboratory safety protocols, or data entry and analysis.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with attention to detail.
Knowledge:
- General knowledge of data entry and record-keeping practices.
- Familiarity with environmental challenges, such as contamination and remediation techniques, is desirable.
- Knowledge of workplace professionalism and teamwork in a research or laboratory setting.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and date management tools.
- Understanding of ethical research practices and the importance of data confidentiality.
Skills:
- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques, including sample handling, preparation, and processing.
- Ability to accurately follow protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain detailed and accurate records of activities and data.
- Competency in using laboratory equipment, such as pipettes, balances, and basic analytical tools.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and presenting findings.
- Basic data entry and analysis skills using software such as Microsoft Excel or similar tools.
- Ability to perform physical tasks related to fieldwork, such as collecting and transporting samples.
