General Description
The purpose of this job is to operate heavy equipment in the operation and maintenance of the landfill, servicing and maintaining equipment, and related work. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Greets customers and provides assistance; direct residents and contractors to dumping areas; operates scales and weighs incoming contractor vehicles for dumping fee.
Operates a backhoe to pack trash; removes and replaces full containers.
Operates front-load trash truck to dump trash cans.
Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on trucks and equipment.
Locates and picks up required parts.
Loads scrap metal and tires into the appropriate container; loads used tires in tire container as required.
Burns brush and trees; maintains ash levels.
Removes Freon and compressors; loads scrap metal into the appropriate container; loads used tires in tire container; bales cardboard boxes for recycling; separates recyclables.
Loads dump truck with gravel for site road repair.
Assists with groundskeeping duties at various convenience sites; performs general custodial duties in landfill facilities.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by some experience operating heavy equipment and mechanical equipment repair; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Physical Requirements
This work performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Bright/dim light; Dust and pollen.
Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
Vibration: Fumes and/or noxious odors.
Traffic: Moving machinery.
Special Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
