General Description
The purpose of this job is to plan, organize, implement, and supervise recreational programs.
This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Represents Dinwiddie County when interacting with parents, guardians or community members, following appropriate protocol when providing information and feedback.
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Plans, implements and supervises countywide recreational programs and special events; orders equipment, materials and supplies; selects and reserves venues; arranges for publicity, security, and staff.
- Generates and processes routine documents such as registration forms, permits, newsletters, press releases, and course offering catalogs.
- Maintains department filing system; establishes new and specialized files according to prescribed methods.
- Schedules meetings and training events for staff and volunteers; maintains appointment calendar; makes travel arrangements.
- Performs routine office duties, such as preparing, faxing and copying documents and answering phones; monitors inventory and orders office supplies.
- Develops flyers, social media advertising, catalogues, public service announcements, and news releases for department; Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers.
- Assists in implementation of long-term plans, goals, and management strategies for programs within assigned department.
- Manages the implementation, training and maintenance for department specific software.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent; related recreation experience preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):
Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Possession of first aid, CPR and AED certifications within six months of employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
