Job Summary

The Development Director fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by planning, guiding, and evaluating the development efforts of the school in fundraising, marketing, event planning, grant writing, communication, alumni affairs, and public relations. The Development Director has decision making responsibilities within essential job functions, in keeping with school policies. The position is hired and evaluated by the principal. The Development Officer (DO) at St. Mary's Catholic School (SMCS) will build, manage, and further meaningful relationships with SMCS's current donors (individuals, foundations, businesses, or organizations) through significant interactions, primarily in-person and individually.

Ministerial Character

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, presidents, and principals serve as leaders of the schools to make Christ's mission present and enduring in the schools. In order to fulfill Christ's mission, the school leaders employ suitable, chosen collaborators, sharing with them Christ's mission and entrusting to them various responsibilities.

Positions employed in this School help extend the ministry of the School leaders in particular ways as outlined in the job description. The employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the School leaders in the performance of their ministry and, therefore, engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential Duties

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and Diocese
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Plans the overall development program in keeping with school needs, the Strategic Plan and budget objectives
  • Collaborates effectively with the principal, Development Committee, school associations, committee chairs and volunteers
  • Personally visit donors to identify individuals who would like to be meaningfully involved in the mission and vision of SMCS;
  • Cultivate personal relationships between those individuals and SMCS;
  • Personally solicit significant gifts from those individuals; and continue to further involve those individuals in the mission and vision of SMCS.
  • Providing a regular summary to the Head of School of interactions with assigned donors, including past and upcoming interactions, solicitations, and new gifts received.
  • Oversees Development staff and volunteers in a manner that ensures effective and efficient practices, and customer-focused work habits
  • Ensures effective work practices in financial accounting and reconciliation, database management, gift recording, donor acknowledgement and stewardship
  • Maintain records on current and prospective donors
  • Ensures that practices are in compliance with school, Diocesan, city, county and state regulations
  • Communicates effectively with the faculty and staff and keeps them informed of upcoming development activities
  • Meet staff development guidelines as set forth by the Diocese / local administration
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
  • Collaborates with others to enhance the work environment.
  • Conferences with others upon request and responds to messages in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates gains in development goals and objectives that are in keeping with the Strategic plan and budget objectives, and a willingness to respond to program needs
  • Serves as a member of the Endowment Committee as requested
  • Attends and participates as needed in faculty meetings as well as professional and community organizations

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Active Catholic with a commitment to SMCS's mission and knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Excellent understanding of and passion for Catholic liberal education and classical education
  • Strong passion for people and interacting individually with them
  • Strong ability to converse with others of various ages, backgrounds, and viewpoints
  • Ability to regularly set and conduct donor visits in a methodical and disciplined manner
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Excellent writing, public speaking and verbal persuasion skills
  • Excellent professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Energetic self-starter with positive, optimistic attitude, and a strong sense of initiative
  • Collaboration, planning and implementation skills
  • Integrity, confidentiality, prudence, and propriety in all interactions
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education :

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience :

  • Development or related field preferred :
  • A minimum of two years development, alumni relations. or related field.

    Proven, measurable track record of successful interactions with donors or clients.

    Proven, measurable track record of successful experience in acquiring major gifts.

  • Experience with Classical Christian / Catholic schools preferred
  • Certifications and Training :

  • Must submit an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Application for Ministry within the first week of employment, participate in an EIM Basic abuse prevention training workshop within 30 days of submitting a complete Application for Ministry, and maintain EIM compliance during the entire term of employment.
  • Working Conditions

  • Required to work some nights and weekends
  • Required to manage high to moderate levels of stress
  • Required to work a full school day
  • Required to work in standard school and office conditions
  • Required to travel to meet with donors - generally within 45 mile radius of the school.
  • Employee Certification

    All employees must adhere to the Catholic Schools Standards of Conduct, the Diocese of Austin EIM policies, and the social, ethical, and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as interpreted by the Bishop of Austin.
