Substitute Teacher and Coordinator Job Description
FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY A substitute teacher is responsible for the implementation of the goals of Catholic education as outlined in The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools (Archbishop Michael Miller):

Qualified candidates will be driven and inspired by the mission of Catholic schools to form young men and women in a high school setting “who will be good citizens of the world, loving God and neighbor and enriching society with the leaven of the gospel, and who will also be good citizens of the world to come, thus fulfilling their destiny to become saints” (Miller, p. 20).

- Provide guaranteed availability of personnel to cover for those who are out because of illness or other commitments
- Available as an immediate answer to the need to cover classes, study halls or other duties as assigned

JOB EXPECTATIONS
- Ensure substitutes are placed in classrooms daily when teachers are absent.
- Review time off submissions in the morning to prepare for sub assignments.
- Assign substitutes to classrooms. Send verification email with detailed information prior to 8:00 a.m., follow-up with a text or call if necessary.
- Communicate with teachers if additional information is needed.
- Communicate with on-call subs if additional staffing is needed to fulfill requests.
- Maintain documentation of substitutes for timesheet approval. Submit documentation to the Assistant Principal for Academics by 11:59 p.m. on the 7th and 22nd of each month.
- Oversee and monitor the student commons daily, ensuring students are adequately supervised the entire class period.
- Carefully follow lesson plans provided if supervising outside the student commons, and ensure students are adequately supervised the entire class period.
- If assigned as a study hall monitor, follow the Study Hall Guidelines as noted in the Faculty Handbook. The primary responsibility is student supervision.
- Submit classroom attendance in a timely manner.
- Manage student behavior on campus as necessary.
• Serve as a positive role model for students and supporting the school’s mission statement. • Perform as an office assistant, lunch supervisor, or assist in other areas deemed necessary when not assigned to a classroom or the student commons.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures in accordance with the rules of the Bishop Lynch Student Handbook.
- Participate in all school liturgies and assemblies.
- Participate in the faculty retreat as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Must possess clear communication skills and strong work ethic in a team environment
- Commitment to being a supportive, respectful, and energetic colleague
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior while maintaining a professional manner
- Ability to demonstrate poise, empathy, tact, and diplomacy
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be able to discern among competing priorities, separating what is essential from what is nonessential
- Working knowledge or experience with Blackboard (or other LMS) is a plus
