The Catholic School System of the Diocese of Scranton is looking for an innovative educator to join the administrative team at St. Nicholas/St. Mary School in the role as Principal starting with the 2025-26 school year. The principal will be the instructional, spiritual and building leader, responsible for the effective operation Catholic educational institution. The principal will serve as the primary agent for creating an environment that fosters academic excellence, Catholic faith formation, vitality and viability.
Responsibilities of the Principal
The principal, as educational leader, creates an atmosphere conducive to the growth of Christian values and academic qualities appropriate to a Catholic school. The principal has the major responsibility for the administration and supervision of the school program and is directly responsible, in all matters, to the Superintendent of Schools. The Bishop appoints the principal.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interprets and implements the philosophy and objectives of Catholic education
- Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Diocesan policies and provides for a Faculty Handbook containing policies and directives
- Shares responsibility in employing professional certified teachers, secretaries, custodians, etc.; assumes responsibility for signing teacher contracts; insures social justice to employees; assumes ultimate responsibility for dismissing members of the staff when such dismissal is warranted, following proper due process procedure
- Assumes responsibility for supervising and evaluating the school’s professional staff; maintains a confidential file of teacher evaluations
- Encourages professionalism, enthusiasm and confidence in the teaching process
- Supervises all paraprofessional, secretarial and non-professional personnel in the school
- Conducts regular faculty meetings to keep staff informed on programs, policies, etc., and to give each a voice in such development; assists in the in-service orientation and training of teachers
- Supervises the preparation of all school reports for the Office for Catholic Schools and for government agencies
- Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, affording students their rights
- Assumes responsibility for the safety of the school plant through such procedures as fire drills and emergency preparedness programs, cleanliness of plant and regular conferences with plant manager and/or maintenance supervisor
- Assumes responsibility for the attendance, safety and health of students
- Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with parents and local community groups to foster understanding and to solicit support for the overall school objectives and programs
- Cooperates with the Student Teacher Programs of local colleges and universities by setting up schedules for some college students to observe, aid and student teach in schools
- Monitors each teacher’s Act 48 requirements for proper compliance
- Monitors each teacher’s theological requirements required by the Diocese
- Coordinates the Teacher Induction Program for beginning teachers
- Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession and participates in principals’ meetings and Diocesan meetings
- Organizes and administers the school’s educational programs and directs, supervises and evaluates all areas of curriculum
- Gives final approval for all new students recommended by the vice principal or director of guidance; assumes ultimate responsibility for suspensions, transfers or recommendations to the Superintendent for expulsion.
Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in educational administration/school leadership/curriculum and instruction/ and/or principal certification, with a minimum of five years of administrative/teaching experience.
- A practicing Catholic with a commitment to Catholic identity in schools;
- Contemporary knowledge of academics, including curriculum development, professional development and technology;
- Track record of academic excellence across all aspects of curriculum;
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with all constituencies.

Pay: $65,000.00 per year
