Job Description
This position is for a Process Engineer / Senior Process Engineer for the US Regional Technical Solutions group. The primary purpose of this position is to lead the implementation of the process engineering scope of work for the US Supply Chain. Primary responsibility for the individual will be to deliver engineered process solutions designed for product quality, personnel safety, business profitability, operability, and efficiency. In this function, the Process Engineer / Senior Process Engineer will be working directly with other Engineers (Process, Utilities, Controls and Packaging), Product Development, QA, Manufacturing, OEM’s, and Trades. In addition to their primary responsibilities the individual will be responsible for technical development of themselves as well as mentoring of junior engineers.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Lead process engineering efforts of small to medium capital projects:
Process Design
Development of Material and Energy Balances, PFD’s and P&ID’s
Preparing equipment and construction bid specifications
Selection, acquisition, installation, commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting of new and existing process equipment and systems
Process optimization during startup and early production
Training of line supervisors, operators and maintenance personnel
Lead / Support of multifunctional teams:
Development and scale-up of processes requiring complex mathematical and engineering analyses of data collected from multiple sources
Prepares manufacturing feasibility assessments and capital cost estimates for various process-related projects
Provides an understanding to various parts of the business the impact of key processing parameters in the conversion of raw ingredients to finished product
Self Directed Technical / Administrative Skill Development:
Participate in Skills Diversification Program
Mentor Junior Engineers, Engineering Student Cooperatives, and Others
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:
Is an expert in developing executable processes suitable for implementation in a manufacturing facility within the project timeline and budget
Able to direct a multifunctional team in the development and implementation of processing solutions requiring complex analyses of data collected from multiple sources
Able to define the physical and chemical transformations that must occur to produce food products along with their individual key processing parameters
Capable of making critical decisions under pressure and with limited information
Able to champion and implement new ideas and technologies
Provides documentation to manufacturing leadership that is critical for the day-to-day operation and continued maintenance of a processing system
Trains manufacturing personnel including operators, supervisors, QA and maintenance on the key operating parameters of processing equipment
Provides an understanding of the impact of the key processing parameters in the conversion of raw ingredient and in-process material to finished product
Successfully manages small – mid-sized capital projects, including cost, schedule, and resources (internal and contractors), as well as leading multi-functional teams in project execution
Able to utilize and manage external resources to deliver project objectives
Working Knowledge of Pumps, Heat Exchangers, Extruders, Depositors, and Mixers
A good understanding of mechanical equipment design and fabrication, including materials of construction and design specifications for the food industry
Working knowledge of industrial utility systems including Steam, Compressed Air, Chilled Water, and HVAC systems
Familiarity with Industrial Power Distribution and Process Control Platforms
Working knowledge of Computer Aided Design software
Working knowledge of Utility Systems
Responsible for process optimization during startup and early production
Excellent leadership and decision making ability
Excellent technical troubleshooting skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Must be open to and comfortable with change
Open to travel based on assignment (50%) averaged over 5 years Majority of Travel will be within the existing US Region Manufacturing footprint
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education:
BS Degree in Chemical, Food, Biosystems, or Agricultural Engineering (Mechanical Engineers with process experience in the food industry will also be considered)
Experience:
3-5 years in the field of Process Engineering
Minimum 2 years of experience in the Confectionery, Food, Beverage, Consumer Goods and/or Pharmaceutical industry is strongly preferred
Experience in leading the Product Commercialization and Process Engineering portion of multiple projects is required
Experience with process scale-up, PFD’s, P&ID’s, GMP’s, process estimating, and process design for the food industry are required

The Ideal Candidate
Candidate must have experience with scaling up processes from bench-top to pilot plant and full scale manufacturing. Experience with food manufacturing strongly preferred but will consider candidates from CPG that have experience with high-speed manufacturing. Candidates ideally will have at least a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, but we will also consider candidates with a mechanical engineering degree and solid experience doing process work. Candidates must have experience troubleshooting large-equipment in manufacturing environments.
