Job Overview
Disability Rights Michigan is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Advocate to join our team. In this role, you will investigate allegations of abuse and neglect, provide information and referral and direct advocacy representation, casework, and monitor facilities where individuals with disabilities live and receive services. As such, assignments may vary from time to time, depending on the focus areas and needs of the agency.
Duties
- Provides information and assistance to clients and their families including explanation of disability laws, client rights under the law, options available, means of achieving rights/desired outcomes and resolving problem situations. Refers individuals to other agencies or community resources as appropriate. Completes necessary follow-up.
- Establishes and maintains presence in assigned facilities and monitors conditions and systemic issues as required to meet focus areas and objectives. Identifies and reports significant issues, problems, or concerns to appropriate DRM team(s).
- Provides timely investigation and direct advocacy assistance, including information and referral, technical assistance, and representation to clients in accordance with agency policy/procedures and approved focus areas.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with advocates, service providers, and consumer groups and others to further client and agency goals.
- Maintains current knowledge of legal mandates, court rulings, government systems and Agency policies related to the rights of children with disabilities.
- Maintain accurate documentation of interactions and case progress.
- Follows Casework Standards and guidelines of agency and maintains complete confidentiality and documentation of advocacy efforts.
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in human services field or equivalent education/experience in human services field, disability rights or investigations.
- Experience and knowledge with Michigan’s behavioral health/public mental health system is preferred.
- A background in human services field, disability rights, and conducting investigations.
- Candidate must demonstrate effective communication, problem-solving and advocacy skills.
- Commitment to the civil rights of all people and the ability to work with individuals from a variety of disability characteristics and cultural backgrounds.
