Description
Role: The Staff Accountant will oversee and maintain financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. This position requires a professional with a strong educational background in accounting and relevant experience in not-for-profit financial management.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic financial leadership to support the organization’s mission and goals.
- Perform general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization.
- Establish internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions and budget preparation.
- Ensure accurate recording of financial transactions and adherence to accounting principles.
- Prepare balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
- Maintain and updates general ledger accounts.
- Ensure compliance with local, state and federal requirements, to include routine reporting requirements.
- Address inquiries from banks.
- Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, and customer accounts.
- Provide outside auditors with assistance. Gather necessary account information and documents to perform annual financial audit, 401(k) audit and workers compensation audit.
- Generate business activity reports, budgets and financial reports for internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Oversee Kansas Department of Transportation accounting processes, including budgeting, reporting and compliance.
- Supervise office staff who are responsible for financial reporting, billing, collections, and payroll.
- Coordinate with software vendor to maintain accounting software systems. Recommend updates to enhance the accounting software.
- Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures, and an on-going understanding of the funding structure of the HCBS/IDD Waiver System.
- Ensure accuracy of data in Human Resources Information System, working collaboratively with Human Resources.
- Prepare and submits payroll. Provide payroll reporting as requested.
- Liaison with third party Information Technology vendor.
- Abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience: Related experience of 2 or more years, preferably with focus on not-for-profit financial management. Certified Public Account designation preferred.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
Interpersonal Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and individuals served. Must demonstrate compassion for individuals with disabilities
Physical/Environmental: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds.
