What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full Time Short Term Respite Staff position at Disabled Persons Action Organization, Inc.?
Disabled Persons Action Organization is looking for a part-time staff member for our Short Term Respite/Recreation Program located at 633 Davidson Street in Watertown.
Schedule: The prospective employee will work 35 hours weekly, and up to 40 if necessary and approved. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm/5:00pm, with 2-3 evening activities per week that could last until approximately 9:00pm. Hours will vary based on activities planned and the needs of the individuals we serve. Additionally, 2-3 weekend activities are required per month.
Rate of Pay:$15.50 per hour
Program Information/Job Description: This program provides relief to parents/caregivers who are responsible for the primary care of their loved one that has a developmental/intellectual disability. Whether the parent/caregiver needs to go grocery shopping, has to deal with an emergency or illness, or just needs time for themselves to relax. The Short Term Respite Program is designed to ensure that an individuals' stay is as relaxing and as much fun as possible. The prospective employee will assist all individuals attending program with meals, changing, activities, and transporting individuals to and from community outings.
Recreational activities (which include larger groups of individuals attending) include (but are not limited to): seasonal dances, participation in local parades/festivals, fashion shows, talent shows, bowling nights, game nights, Zumba and other types of "fun" exercising, girls night (getting hair & nails done), guys night (activities of their choosing), parent support group, movie night, swimming, various community events and many, many more. One of the main goals of this program is to get our individuals out into the community as much as possible to meet their needs, interests and to have them become as independent as possible while being productive members of society. Required Education and Experience:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency
- Two (2) years of experience working with the developmentally disabled or a similar field (preferred)
- Must possess knowledge of principles and practices of the supervision of children and adults with developmental disabilities (former Direct Support Professional experience required) and have good written, verbal and organization skills
- Valid Driver License and a favorable driving record. An abstract of the prospective employees' driving record will be obtained by D.P.A.O. if issued in New York State. If issued outside of New York State, the applicant will be required to supply an abstract of their driving record from the issuing state.
- Candidate may work alone at times, and must be able to complete all physical job duties that are required which can include, but are not limited to: bathing, dressing, grooming, lifting/pulling/pushing, must be physically capable of transferring, assisting with transfers and lifting person(s) who require physical assistance, must be able to reach and bend as they assist participants with physical activities, must be able to transport individuals while operating agency vehicles.

Paid Time Off: The agency's paid time off package includes vacation time after six months, 2 weeks of vacation after one year, 3 weeks of vacation after 5 years and 4 weeks of vacation after 10 years. Also, four personal days per year, 12 sick days per year, and 12 holidays off with pay. If required to work on a holiday based on the needs of the program, the holiday can be saved and used within the month.
