Exceptional Children's Teacher (EC Teacher)

Discovery Charter School is a cutting-edge charter middle and high school just north of Durham, NC seeking qualified middle and high school teachers.

Discovery offers a unique and exciting Education Plan to help meet all students where they are and grow their individual talents and interests. Using an exciting, student-driven STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) curriculum, Discovery aims to grow student creativity, curiosity, and collaboration during the formative middle and high school years. Discovery features a high-tech learning environment including 1:1 student computers, 3D printers, and a virtual reality lab, as well as a highly personalized learning environment including standing desks and soft seating. Discovery will also offer a one-of-a-kind Passion Learning Time allowing students dedicated and structured time each day to grow their individual passions. Real-world experiences are essential to Discovery's mission, and as such field trips and guest speakers occur frequently.

The EC Teacher:

• Develops lesson plans, adapts materials and designs activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals
• Coordinate communication between IEP team regarding specific case load students’ IEP services/questions/concerns
• Monitors/tracks students’ progress for maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines
• Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.
• Develops Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities; implements the IEP; and uses diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEP’s as needed.
• Monitors/tracks student behavior; maintains discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrains.
• Initiates contact with parents/staff to schedule annual IEP meetings
• Creates/finalizes all annual iep paperwork in ECATS
• Finalizes all IEP paperwork in ECATS (transitions, annuals, 3 year re evaluations)
• Creates ec-specific progress reports quarterly and distributes them alongside general report cards

The right person for this position will be highly flexible, dedicated, energetic, able to work well both individually and in groups, have strong communication skills (written and verbal), have a passion for children, and be able to think creatively out-of-the-box.

- An NC teaching license with special education endorsement

- Must be a strong communicator, organized, a team player, and strong collaborator

- Must be tech-savvy or open to learning new technologies including virtual reality, 3D printing, using e-readers, teaching remotely, etc.

- Must be a lifelong learner

- Must have a passion for students

- A minimum of 3 years of experience is preferred but not required

Pay: $36,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
