Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Food Service Manager to oversee our food service operations in a licensed, non-profit childcare center in Kalispell, MT. The ideal candidate will have proficient cooking and baking skills, excellent organizational skills, problem solving capabilities, and time management and applied math skills. Meals will be planned for and prepared as required by the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), including record-keeping tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare kid-friendly menus in accordance with CACFP guidelines: whole grain ingredients, limited sugar, and limited processed food; family style service; and appropriate portions.
- Modify menus and recipes and prepare foods to meet medical and feeding needs of children with disabilities or food allergies.
- Complete timely and accurate documentation according to licensing and CACFP guidelines and requirements.
- Maintain established standards of sanitation, safety and food preparation and storage as set by local and state health departments. Ensure all licensing regulations are met.
- Obtain any required certifications or training, including Annual CACFP Director trainings.
Minor Duties
- Build and maintain friendly relationships with staff and with young children and their families.
- Plan for and participate in 3-4 family gatherings each year, including 2-3 evening events and informal classroom gatherings.
- Work with teaching staff to incorporate Farm-to Table activities with the children.
- Purchase food and supplies weekly to prepare planned menus for the number of enrolled children and program staff within a budget set by Board of Directors and Director.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Minor supervision of support kitchen staff.
Education/Experience
- High School diploma or GED.
- One-year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience, with knowledge of meal planning and food preparation for large groups.
- Basic math skills for determining number of meals to be served and adjusting recipes and serving portions. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Experience working with children in an early childhood setting is preferred, but not required.
Work Environment
Working in a childcare environment requires the ability to work under sometimes noisy and chaotic conditions. The kitchen is centrally located and utilized by staff as well, for both classroom cooking activities and their own personal meals. Exposure to illnesses common in a childcare community are possible.
Licensing Regulations and Required Trainings
State childcare regulations require all employees to have current immunizations, including but not limited to MMR and/or Rubella immunity and Tetanus (DT). Release of information for background checks is required. Fingerprinting is required. A minimum of 5 hours of CACFP required training is required annually. In addition, training in mandatory reporting is also required. ServSafe Food Safety Training and Certification may also be required, dependent on current state childcare licensing rules.
