District 19 CSB is seeking a Prevention Specialist responsible for the delivery and promotion of prevention services (school/community-based) for nine (9) localities served by D19 Community Services Board – primary assignment will be Hopewell/Prince George/Surry service areas.

Essential job duties of this position include: implementation of an array of prevention activities that include assessing needs and recommending prevention strategies; program development; presentation skills; working with children and families in a community based setting, to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse and related problems based upon sound research based principles and processes. Successful applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services field (which includes social work, gerontology, psychology, psychiatric rehabilitation, special education, sociology, counseling, vocational rehabilitation, and human services counseling).

Considerable experience working with families and children, teaching and/or public speaking skills to include lesson planning and/or knowledge of computers, experience in the field of substance abuse.

A valid VA Driver’s License with acceptable driving record and community-based planning experience.
Prefer Master’s degree in Human Services, supervisory experience.

Certified Prevention Specialist Preferred.

Knowledge Of: Etiology of SA/MH/MR; physiological/psychological/social/cultural aspects of substance abuse; treatment philosophy/approaches in substance abuse; self-help groups; community-based resources and agencies; confidentiality regulations; prevention techniques; teaching techniques; cognitive/behavioral processes.

Skills In: Grant writing/program implementation; communications: oral, written, and interpersonal; working with various populations, cultures, special groups; maintaining accurate records; organizing and facilitating groups; conducting research and evaluation studies. Abilities To: Interpret the meaning of recovery and healthy/responsible living; establish and maintain trust and rapport with others; make sound and appropriate decisions; understand and productively work with various populations, cultures, and special groups; work independently and as a team with other professionals; negotiate and resolve conflicts and other difficult situations.

Position is a grade S-C6. Salary Range: $45,409.00 - $51,087 annually.

Flexible work schedule, including 4 day work week, is possible in some positions.

Position requires pre-employment extensive background check and drug screening, position requires a valid driver’s license in state of residence with a point balance of -6 or higher.
