Description

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Investigator this person will assist in the trial preparation of criminal cases. The person in this position is responsible for all levels of investigative work and / or is assigned more complex or sophisticated cases, leading special investigative assignments and / or cases, locating individuals needed for trial, gathering evidence, investigating and enforcing court orders and preparing case files. May perform as a team leader or work independently on special assignments based upon needs of the office. Performs related work as required by the Assistant District Attorney, the District Attorney or his designee.

  • Will assist Assistant District Attorneys in preparing cases for trial
  • Investigates charges; examines evidence; determines facts of cases
  • Attends Court as necessary to assist Assistant District Attorney with trial
  • Will lead special investigations and may be assigned more complex or sophisticated cases by the Chief of the Criminal Division
  • Assemble and organizes new case files, locate and contacts victims, witnesses and police officers
  • Interviews and assists in preparing them for trial
  • Obtains current addresses and phone numbers; locates defendants in the prison system
  • May provide testimony during trials and orders and / or gathers evidence, photos, rap sheets, mug shots, medical reports, certified convictions, police reports, statements and other related information; reviews information obtained
  • Obtains criminal records and history
  • Secures evidence
  • Performs legal research; produces monthly reports and enters various information and data into the computer system
  • Conducts searches on the computer to obtain information
  • Serves subpoenas and summons
  • Executes warrants; delivers ex-parte motions
  • Receives and handles police reports and other documents as requested by assigned attorney

  • Performs clerical tasks as needed, such as typing, copying, filing, faxing, scanning and answering the phone
  • And any other duties that may be assigned.

Requirements :

  • Must have knowledge of legal terminology and of District Court and inferior court proceedings, federal laws, state statutes, local ordinances, department policies, procedures and regulations
  • Must have knowledge of criminal laws including those relative to search, seizure, arrest, and rules of evidence
  • Must have knowledge of report and record maintenance principles and practices. Ability to issue and receive oral and written instructions and the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper courses of action within the established framework of policies and procedures
  • Must have the ability to maintain composure under emergency situations, and to work effectively under stressful conditions and to exercise discretion
  • Must have the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such police reports, rap sheets, court docket, court records, criminal code, city directory, and criminal law and procedural publications and to handle diverse tasks while maintaining attention to detail for accuracy
  • Must have the skill in operating a variety of modern office equipment and software in processing information in prescribed formats and knowledge of : Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Must be able to type using the QWERTY keyboard or equivalent of at least 10 words per minute, to understand oral and written instructions, to serve the public with patience, tact and integrity
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and fellow employees and to establish guidance, assistance, and / or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations
  • Must have the ability to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for work as needed to meet the demands of the office and may be required to attend meetings before and after business hours
  • Required Education / Qualifications :

    Employee must have the following qualifications :

  • High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in criminal justice, supplemented by more than one-year previous experience and / or training involving investigative and / or law enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • Must be Post Certified
  • Desired Qualifications :

    Experience in broad array of issues involving the Criminal Justice System and experience working within an environment requiring cultural and political sensitivity and tact.

    Physical Demands : As needed to perform the essential functions of the position. Which include but are not limited to :

  • Must have the ability to raise or lower objects from one level or another (includes pushing and pulling) (10lbs - 50lbs)
  • to frequently bend, stoop, and climb, ability to work for extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation
  • ability to work under pressure of deadlines on a regular basis, ability to stand and sit for long periods of time
  • Must have the ability to read and write the English language.
  • Salary Range

    Starting salary commensurate with experience -with benefits, paid health for employee and retirement benefits.
