What are the responsibilities and job description for the Specialist, Strategic School Operations position at District of Columbia Public Schools?
The Office of Operations (OoO) is comprised of the Strategic School Operations, Food & Nutrition Services, School Security, and Facilities divisions. OoO is responsible for guiding the operations and functions for all 118 schools within the District. Our mission is to ensure DCPS Stakeholders – principals, teachers, students, and central services teams – have the operational systems, facilities, and support to be excellent.
The Specialist, Strategic School Operations will join a community of professionals committed to proving “what’s possible” for traditional urban public school districts. The Specialist will provide support and coaching to cross-functional teams across school-based staff and Central Office teams. The Specialist will assist in crisis and emergency management at local schools across the district.
The Specialist, Strategic School Operations will report to the Manager, Strategic School Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Provides general operational support and focused support in the following: school-based operational efficiency, excellent customer service, consistent facilities upkeep, and the development of non-instructional staff.
- Ensure school-based operational leader (and other POCs) have access to online database such as Quickbase
- Completes facility walks on a regular basis to ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance.
- Provides observational information to school leaders that can be used in staff evaluations.
- Assists with the coordination of contracted and outside services assigned to the school—security, food service, nursing, and IT.
- Liaises with Facilities division regarding the management of work orders, facilities improvements, and modernization projects.
- Ensures that schools’ main office is fully functional and staffed.
- Ensures availability and actively partcipates in training and professional development opportunities and resources for school-based operational staff; may provide coaching and strategies related to operational leadership and direction of school-based non-instructional staff.
- Liaises with DCPS Central Office to establish clear communication and operations.
- Provides resources to increase the efficiency of work streams and the development of school based operational team.
- Supports schools around critical times such as school opening, periodic breaks for extended year sites, inclement weather and emergency situations.
- Ensures that the annual school emergency plan is regularly updated and reviewed, and the School Emergency Response Team is prepared.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and three to five years of related work experience.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
- Extremely organized, creative and solutions-oriented.
- Previous experience as a school-based operations leader in a high-functioning school preferred.
