The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) for the District of Maryland serves as the chief federal law enforcement office in Maryland and is charged with pursuing justice and ensuring public safety on behalf of the United States. The USAO is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division to help discharge this mission by investigating and prosecuting criminal cases in Maryland. This positions will be located in the Greenbelt, MD office.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member in good standing of at least one bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate excellent academic and professional credentials, superior oral and written communication skills, good judgment, and the ability to function with minimal guidance in a demanding environment.

Writing Sample: Applicants are encouraged to submit a writing sample not to exceed fifteen (15) pages. While not required, submission of a writing sample is strongly preferred and may be considered as part of the overall assessment of qualifications.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include handling the magistrate docket which hears misdemeanors cases from various federal installations and lands within the District of Maryland and which duties include: (1) responding to suppression and discovery motions; (2) handling a high volume docket, including a high trial volume; (3) training military Special Assistant United States Attorneys; (4) advocating at sentencings for the interests of the government and victims; (5) maintaining professional relationships with law enforcement and the defense bar; and (6) training law enforcement officers from many agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, United States Park Police, and the National U.S. Park Rangers, regarding federal practice and investigation.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
