DEFINITION OF POSITION:  Provide direction and development of curriculum and instruction in alignment with the district’s student achievement goals and oversee matters related to special education. Under the direction of the assistant superintendent, plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate special education program. 

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Assistant Superintendent 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Possess or be eligible for a Washington State administrator certificate with appropriate special education endorsement
  • Successful administrative experience planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating special education program(s)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Special Education
  • Evidence of successful experience overseeing special education program(s)
  • Knowledge of special education curriculum and instruction in alignment with student achievement goals
  • Successful experience developing and implementing IEPs including transition plans, behavioral plans, and functional behavior assessments
  • Knowledge of Washington State School Reform and how it applies to Special Education
  • Experience designing and implementing programs to meet the needs of students
  • Certification as Right Response Trainer

ESSENTIAL JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES:

 

Program Leadership and Compliance

  • Supervise special education programs, ensuring compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and due process requirements, including assessment and student placement
  • Plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the special education program and ensure accountability through program monitoring
  • Develop and oversee extended school year services, Child Find activities, and appropriate placement for students with disabilities

Curriculum and Services Coordination

  • Ensure the development and implementation of appropriate curriculum, programs, and a continuum of services for eligible students, including 504 accommodations
  • Coordinate special services such as speech, hearing, occupational and physical therapy, and preschool programs
  • Collaborate with building administrators to align special education activities with district curricula, programs, and assessments

Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing
  • Serve as a liaison between staff, parents, students, support staff, and school personnel to address needs and ensure effective communication
  • Inform staff and the community about special education programs and services
  • Work collaboratively with staff, parents, and external agencies to address the needs of behaviorally and emotionally challenged children

Supervision and Training

  • Provide guidance, supervision, and training for paraprofessionals and other staff members
  • Participate in the planning, equipping, and delivery of special education classroom programs
  • Recruit certificated and classified staff members
  • Supervise and evaluate certificated staff members using district-adopted instructional framework

Budget and Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the special education budget, ensuring appropriate allocation and expenditure of funds
  • Ensure federal, state, and local special education reports are accurate and submitted on time
  • Administer cooperative arrangements with other districts to meet the needs of students not adequately served by the local district

Operational Oversight

  • Work with the transportation department to plan services for special education students
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure professionalism in appearance, actions, and decisions
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and adapt to multiple demands in high-pressure situations

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned while demonstrating flexibility, independence, and a commitment to quality work

TERMS OF CONTRACT:

  • Salary: $106,048 - $115,883 per year
  • Length of Contract: 232 days/year (includes 22 vacation days and 12 paid holidays), position to start in August of 2025
  • Benefits/Leaves: Medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year.  Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS).  Additional leave benefits are provided per board policies.
