POSITION OVERVIEW:
TITLE: Fire and Safety Technician
STATUS/FLSA: Full-Time/Non-Exempt
PAY GRADE: Hourly
DIRECT REPORTS: Full-time ( ); Part-time ( )
SUPERVISOR: Executive Director of Safety and Security
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 240 Days. Salary determined by schedule set by the Board.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Fire Safety Technician is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and ensuring the proper functioning of all fire safety systems across the school district. This includes fire alarms, extinguishers, sprinklers and emergency exits. The technician will also assist with fire safety training, conduct fire drills and collaborate with local fire departments to ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Fire Safety Systems Maintenance and Inspection:
- Perform regular inspections, testing and maintenance of fire alarms, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers.
- Identify and repair faulty fire safety equipment and ensure compliance with district, local, and state fire codes.
- Maintain accurate records of all inspections, tests, and maintenanace activities.
Fire Prevention and Training:
- Assist in developing and delivering fire safety training programs for staff and students.
- Participate in planning and conducting fire drills, ensuring proper evacuation procedures.
- Collaborate with school administrators and safety teams to enhance fire safety awareness.
Emergency Response:
- Act as a first responder in fire-related incidents, providing support until emergency services arrive.
- Assist in post-incident reviews, documenting findings, and recommending improvements.
- Collaborate with local fire departments during inspections, drills, and actual emergiences.
Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure the district remains compliant with all applicable fire safety regulations and standards.
- Keep detailed logs of maintenance activities and prepare reports for district leadership.
- Monitor and document fire safety code violations, making recommendations for corrections.
- Document and submit all required paperwork to the State through the Safe Schools portal.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of fire safety systems, equipment, and procedures.
- Knowledge of South Carolina School Board Insurance Trusts, rules, regulations, and requirements as it relates to district inspections.
- Ability to read and interpret fire safety codes, blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills with staff, students, and emergency personnel.
- Proficiency in using fire inspection software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USAGE:
Use computers for data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations or custom applications, operate equipment, use hand-held power equipment or light machinery.
EDUCATION:
- High School diploma or equivalent (required).
- Associate’s degree or certification in Fire Science, Fire Safety, or a related field (preferred).
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:
- State or nationally recognized Firefighter certification (preferred).
- Certification in Fire Alarm and Detection Systems or Fire Extinguisher Inspection (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
- Stop the Bleed Training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and climbing ladders.
- Capable of working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- School district facilities, including classrooms, hallways, mechanical rooms, and outdoor areas.
- Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous conditions during fire safety inspections.
- May require flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, in case of emergencies.
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Safety and Security.
