REPORTS TO:  Principal

 

EDUCATION:

  1. 3 years classroom experience
  2. Masters of Library Science from an accredited university
  3. Or a Masters plus a School Librarian Certificate (24 hours) from an accredited university or eligible for a probationary library certificate. 

Terms of Contract:  According to district approved calendar

 

POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE:

 

  1. Ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information by providing
  2. Intellectual and physical access to information
  3. Learning experiences that encourage users to become discriminating consumers and skilled creators of information
  4. Leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use of instructional and information technology
  5. Resources and activities that contribute to lifelong learning
  6. A facility that functions as the information center of the school
  7. Resources that represent a diversity of experiences, opinions, social and cultural perspectives

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

     Management and Administration of Library Media Center 

  1.  Plan long-range goals of the library media center program with faculty,  administration and students.
  2.  Plan the budget with the administration, school-based councils, and/or  advisory committees, based on the needs and objectives of the library media  center program.
  3.  Administer the budget according to the goals and objectives of the program.
  4.  Meet periodically with the principal to evaluate and discuss short-range goals and accomplishments for improving the library media center. 
  5. Develop and/or implement library media center policies.
  6. Develop plans for maintaining a technologically current facility and program.
  7. Organize, classify, and catalog library materials,
    following nationally recognized professional standards.
  8. Solicit suggestions from and communicate with faculty and students about services, materials, programs, and facilities.
  9. Evaluate programs, services, facilities and materials informally and formally on a continuous basis identifying strengths and weaknesses.
  10. Organize and maintain the library media center as a functional, attractive, safe and orderly environment for optimal use by students and faculty.
  11. Publicize the library media center programs, services, and materials.
  12. Maintain accurate and up-to-date automated library circulation system.
  13. Train and supervise library media center clerical staff, volunteers, and/or student helper

     Resources/Collection Development 

  1. Follow the district-approved selection policy, which includes a procedure for the reconsideration of materials.
  2. Possess broad knowledge of the school curriculum and plan with teachers and administration for development of collection of materials to support the curriculum.
  3. Choose materials using selection tools such as:  bibliographies, periodical reviews, workshops, recommendations, and professional judgment.
  4. Maintain current, research-based, relevant professional collection.
  5. Offer a current and balanced collection that includes multicultural selections.
  6. Maintain statistical records needed to verify circulation and library media center holdings.
  7. Make general repairs, weed collection, and take annual inventory.
  8. Provide for scheduling, circulating, repairing, and maintaining audio-visual equipment (when applicable). 

     Library Media Services 

  1. Maintain flexible use of the library media center by individuals, small groups, and large groups for research, browsing, recreational reading, and/or listening (when appropriate).
  2. Provide training to staff in use of new materials, technology, and equipment, as appropriate.
  3. Support classroom teachers as a consultant in the development of instructional units, activities, and curriculum with print and nonprint materials.
  4. Assist faculty in the selection of materials to supplement classroom instruction.
  5. Establish positive rapport with staff and students.
  6. Make the library media center and its resources accessible to students and faculty.
  7. Provide orientation for new faculty and students.
  8. Facilitate the circulation of materials among schools in the district or with other agencies, as appropriate.
  9. Make the library media center and its services available to parents and other community members. 

     Student Services 

  1. Create a climate conducive to learning in which students display initiative and assume a personal responsibility for learning and conduct.
  2. Provide for independent and cooperative group learning.
  3. Guide students in the selection of appropriate resources.
  4. Help students to develop habits of independent research work.
  5. Provide appropriate reading guidance to students.
  6. Encourage students to develop lifelong reading skills.
  7. Incorporate the use of technology in accessing information. 

     Professional Growth and Responsibilities 

  1. Follow the school’s and district’s policies and procedures.
  2. Promote compliance with the copyright law.
  3. Handle concerns of others in a positive and professional manner in order to protect user’s rights and privacy and confidentiality.
  4. Attend appropriate professional activities and meetings.
  5. Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency code of ethics.
