Job Title: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL 

 

Classification: Administrator

 

Salary:  $64,118.57

 

Description: The Assistant Principal supports and assists the principal in providing leadership, direction and guidance to a school that is focused on student learning and achievement.  As directed, he/she helps to oversee the entire operation of the school setting including, students, staff, facilities, etc.   The Assistant Principal also assists the principal in promoting the academic growth and physical well-being of each student and promoting the professional and personal growth of all personnel.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Master's Degree in Educational Administration or Curriculum and Instruction
  • Valid Arizona Administrative Certificate or Arizona Principal’s Certificate or evidence of eligibility to be certified by the Arizona Department of Education before the start of the school year
  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate
  • Arizona Structured English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement; or 45 SEI hours (or able to obtain within first year of school employment in Arizona); or Bilingual Endorsement; or English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement is required
  • Three (3) years successful teaching experience
  • Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Strong knowledge of the English language including reading, writing and oral communication with extensive skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Knowledge of Spanish including reading, writing and oral communication is desired
  • Strong leadership and implementation skills 
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Prioritize work, take initiative, adhere to time restraints and attend to multiple tasks on a variety of issues
  • Must be capable of developing effective instructional programs
  • Must have experience in school leadership which may include supervision/management or team work
  • Must have effective and  appropriate public speaking skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with students, parents and staff
  • Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health
  • Administrative experience is preferred

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Elementary/Middle School curriculum and instruction
  • Child development
  • Special education  and language acquisition programs is preferred
  • State law regarding  “Highly Qualified Teacher” and Structured English Immersion (SEI) for certified and non-certified personnel
  • State law regarding SEI, Evaluation process and Highly Qualified Teacher policies and procedures
  • State and District evaluation of personnel procedures and policies 
  • Student intervention programs and procedures
  • School finance and budget administration
  • Technology applications and its use as an instructional tool
  • Federal and Arizona School Law governing schools and districts
  • Effective school management procedures
  • Analysis of achievement data
  • School Master, Aesop, Remote Requisitions, computer programs for Maintenance and Technology Work Orders is desired
  • Arithmetic and basic mathematic procedures
  • Policies, procedures, and regulations of the District and the schools

Ability to:

 

  • Comprehend and perform functions from written and oral instructions
  • Prioritize work, take initiative, adhere to time restraints and attend to multiple tasks
  • Analyze and present achievement data
  • Participate in staff selection, assignment, orientation and evaluation
  • Provide in-service to staff
  • Plan, organize and motivate staff
  • Work effectively with a diverse community
  • Communicate ideas and programs to individuals, staff, parents, community, etc.

 

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the principal in overseeing the entire operation of the school setting including, students, staff, facilities, etc. as directed
  • Assist with maintaining a positive environment that develops social, emotional, and cognitive skills; as well as promotes and supports cooperation and learning
  • Set high expectations for students and all school personnel
  • Maintain effective working relationships with school district personnel to support the efforts of the district as well as the local school
  • Assist with creating and maintaining a climate of collaborative planning and decision making
  • Assist with analyzing test data and set goals regarding student achievement
  • Assist with designing and implementing programs that promote and motivate individual student and group excellence
  • Collaborate with the special education teachers/department regarding student growth and attend IEP Meetings, parent meetings, psychological evaluation meetings, etc
  • Attend IEP Meetings, parent meetings, psychological evaluation meetings, etc
  • Assist with administering state achievement tests
  • Provide for a safe learning environment through appropriate student discipline policies
  • Assist with supervision and enforcement of rules and procedures for student discipline and classroom management
  • Assist the staff to continually maintain good student behavior and safety in the classroom, halls, cafeteria, gymnasium, playground and on field trips
  • Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary according due process to the rights of students
  • Discuss and resolve individual student problems
  • Maintain an accurate and current student log or spreadsheet regarding discipline referrals, disciplinary action(s) taken, interventions, etc. 
  • Support  and assist in the implementation of building administrator directives
  • Assist with developing an annual budget and manage finances including maintenance and operations, grants, capital, student organization and all program funds
  • Assist with monitoring transportation services provided to students
  • Maintain an active and positive relationship with students and parents
  • Attend special events held to recognize student achievement
  • Support and attend extracurricular activities
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing and hiring of the professional staff, paraprofessionals and support personnel
  • Assist the principal in ensuring that all certified and non-certified educational staff is “highly qualified” according to State regulations and law
  • Assist the principal in ensuring that all certified staff has appropriate SEI certification according to State regulations and law 
  • Assist with orienting newly assigned staff members and continually assist in their professional and personal development
  • Make daily classroom visits
  • Assist with providing direction on curriculum and instruction
  • Use and model the use of technology as a teaching tool and accurate record keeping
  • Assist the staff with Parent/Teacher Conferences
  • Assist the staff in the administering of state achievement tests and ELL testing
  • Assist with the Evaluate process of personnel as assigned by the principal
  • of a teacher/school personnel whose work is unsatisfactory according to established procedures
  • Assist with facilitating staff meetings 
  • Assist with composing and/or typing letters, bulletins, memos, handbooks, newsletters, etc.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining positive relationships between the school and the community to encourage support of the school objectives, goals and programs, interpret procedures and policies and to encourage community participation in school life
  • Attend the school site-based council
  • Attend the school safety committee
  • Assist with facilitating and supervising on-going emergency training as well as conducting student and staff emergency crisis drills
  • Assist with supervising school fire drills
  • Attend School Board Meetings as directed
  • Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices, attend professional meetings, read professional journals and publications, etc. for continued professional development
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel and student and family records and/or information
  • Adhere and support all Governing School Board policies and/or regulations, the assigned school rules, Arizona Revised Statutes and federal regulations pertaining to education
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the Principal or his/her designee

 

Length of Employment:

 

  • Ten and one-half (10½) months

 

Reports to: Building Principal 

 

Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy GDO
