DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
Description of Position
The Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing daily operational activities, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and alignment with organizational goals. This role requires strong leadership, strategic planning, and the ability to manage multiple departments and initiatives to enhance overall performance.
Area of Responsibility
Duties include but not limited to the following:
- Works collaboratively with the Superintendent in implementing the vision and goals of the District in respect to transportation/maintenance services, custodial service and facilities
- Works closely with contracted companies to provide highly qualified transportation and custodial personnel
- Develop and manage budget expenditures
- Provide routine departmental updates to the Superintendent
- Maintain all school properties with the district
- Ensure fleet vehicles and operation thereof are in compliance with city, state, and federal laws and school policy
- Maintain files, statistical data and operational performance and submit all required reports to the superintendent and other agencies as required
- Direct, manage, supervise and evaluate all aspects of transportation
- Operate fleet maintenance and service facility to ensure that all vehicles are safe and in the best possible condition with emphasis on preventive maintenance
- Provide and maintain a trained pool of drivers and/or vehicles to support all athletic events and trip requirements
- Design, develop, implement and continuously update the Pupil Transportation Routing System to ensure the most efficient, economical, and convenient process is utilized to meet district needs
- Coordinate with all inter district agencies to ensure smooth transportation operations
- Ensure a workable accident prevention program; emphasizing safety of students, vehicle operators and mechanics
- Investigate all accident reports and maintain accident records
- Ensure the school bus discipline system is carried out to enable safe school bus operations
- Evaluate personnel performance in accordance with district policy
- Supervise and control all activities at the bus shop
- Coordinate drug testing for all school bus drivers
- Assist with the recruitment of maintenance personnel
- Drive school bus in emergency cases
- Is punctual for work, meetings, conferences, and appointments
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency and effectiveness across all departments.
- Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and financial planning to ensure operational sustainability.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track success and drive improvements.
- Collaborate with department heads to streamline processes and improve workflow.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, industry regulations, and legal requirements.
- Lead, mentor, and develop staff to foster a high-performing work environment.
- Manage risk assessment and crisis response strategies to ensure business continuity.
- Utilize data analysis and reporting tools to make informed business decisions.
- Implement and oversee technology solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
- Serve as a key liaison between leadership, employees, and external stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Computer skills (Proficient in Microsoft Office, SpiceWorks, Navigate District’s Software, etc.)
- Ability to multitask and handle difficult situations.
- Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations and work well with others.
- Knowledge and experience in supervision of care of buildings and grounds.
Preferred Qualifications & Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 5-7 years in a senior leadership role overseeing operations.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to analyze data and implement strategic initiatives.
- Proficiency in budgeting, financial analysis, and resource management.
- Experience with process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
