DIRECTOR OF WORLD LANGUAGE Gr. 6-12
The purpose of this position is to have an individual responsible for supervising and implementing the provisions of World Language programs in the Waltham Public Schools in accordance with State and Federal regulations and mandates. Working in partnership with the educational leaders of the Waltham Schools, the Director assures that the curriculum and instruction meets the educational and developmental needs of the students and staff. They oversee the district’s needs in World Language.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
- Master’s Degree in Education or in content area.
- Valid Massachusetts State License as Supervisor/Director.
- At least five (5) years experience in the field of public education, including experience in administration and teaching.
Knowledge Required
- Thorough knowledge of 2021 Massachusetts World Languages Curriculum Frameworks.
- Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques of teaching needed in all areas of World Language.
- Has a comprehensive view of the various perspectives regarding the World Language issues which students should be familiar.
- Understands connections with other disciplines and project-based learning.
- Understands the requirements and implementation of the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy Program.
Abilities Required
- Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the Gr. 6 - 12 World Language teachers.
- Ability to manage staff effectively.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to staff, students, the superintendent of schools, other administrators and parents.
- Ability to prepare and administer a budget and grants in a cost effective manner.
- Ability to work independently and carry out assigned projects to their completion.
- Ability to apply technology to meet the needs and duties as outlined in the job description.

Performs varied and responsible duties with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action while planning, administering and executing duties. Works well both independently and in concert with others.
Supervision Given and Received
Work under the general direction of the Superintendent of Schools and the direct supervision of Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. Hires, supervises and evaluates World Language teachers with school principals. Is evaluated by the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning as stated in the contract.
Description of Duties:

- Supervises and implements instructional programs.
- Aligns department work with that of the schools by leveraging the School Improvement Plans and the District Strategic Plan.
- Assures the continuity and sequential order of World Language curriculum for grades 6-12.
- Assures that grade level material is aligned with the state 2021 World Language frameworks.
- Responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Seal of Biliteracy Program providing the opportunity to as many students as possible.
- Supports the development of courses at WHS that are appropriate for all students, including students entering from the middle school Dual Language strand.
- Measures student achievement and adapts instruction accordingly.
- Assists teachers to coordinate interdisciplinary instruction with colleagues in other subject areas.
- Selects, orders, receives and distributes appropriate instructional materials and equipment.
- Plans for professional development training based on needs identified by the
WL Department.
- Assists principals in recruitment, hiring, supervising and evaluating staff.
- Exhibits strong communication skills and communicates in a timely and effective manner
with staff, administrators, students and parents.
- Demonstrates initiative, professional growth and self-improvement.
- Develops positive school-community relations.
- Uses confidential information for professional purposes only.
- Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendents.
Salary: As defined in the Waltham School Administrators Association Contract
