Qualifications
Knowledge and skills in general maintenance and repairs, which include plumbing, heating, electrical, painting, carpentry, etc. must be multi-skilled in the trades. This position reports to and is evaluated annually by the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds. This position includes an extensive benefits package including, but not limited to medical, dental, retirement benefits and life insurance.
Summary of Position
The general maintenance person is responsible for all aspects of repairs and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. There are no supervisory responsibiliites. This is a twelve month position.
Performance Responsibilites
- Responsible for repairs and preventative maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment in the school district. These repairs and maintenance tasks are not those that are considered the custodian's responsibilities, rather they involve more time, materials or a different skill set to complete the job.
- Performs skilled labor functions, including the ability to do electrical wiring, plumbing, boiler maintenance, mechanical work, and some HVAC related tasks.
- Becomes familiar with all aspects of building systems (heating, electrical, air conditioning, and general building construction, etc.) so that regular maintenance of these systems can be performed by any of our maintenance staff members.
- Reports to the Supervisor of Buildings and Ground all major or serious emergency repairs needed and the progress as well as completion of tasks associated with specific repairs.
- Works to learn the daily routine operations of each building in the school district so he or she can be assigned to serve as a substitute custodian for someone absent from work.
- Periodically checks all safety devices including fire-fighting equipment, door locks, playground equipment, field equipment, etc. Responsible for ensuring all equipment and supplies meet and pass state and federal regulations and inspections.
- Maintains all athletic fields and prepares them for practices and competitions with lines, bleachers and/or benches, other equipment or supplies needed for athletics.
- Responsible for the removal of snow from the district parking lots.
- Responsible for knowing all buildings' emergency shutdown procedures in the event of emergencies.
- Inspects all roofs and roof drains annually to ensure proper drainage and good condition of roofs. Ensure all drains are clear of debris for good drainage. Maintains and replaces filters located on rooftops, as necessary.
- Calls vendors for maintenance assistance when necessary to keep buildings and facilities in satisfactory condition.
- Is on call at times for emergency duty or any additional duty requiring overtime which will come from Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or the Director of Administrative Services.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing and walking.
- Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
Auditory and Visual Requirements: Must be within normal range
Worksite Environment: Indoors and outdoor - with exposure to outdoor elements/climate during the workday
Licenses and Certification:
- Relevant clearances required by law
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License
Problem Solving Skills:
- Must exhibit high levels of problem solving skills for overall efficiency and productivity in a school environment.
Mental Demands:
- Must have a steady response to unpredictable situations
- Must demonstrate independent judgment and discretion in making decisions
- Must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines
