About the Position:

There a variety of substitute positions available in CPS. The District Pool includes positions across all CPS schools. The primary responsibility of a substitute teacher is to execute class and lessons according to an absent teacher's written teaching plan. Assignment may vary from day to day. See "Terms" for daily rates. There are 3 types of substitute positions:

  • Building Substitute - Report to assigned school every day during the school year for the purpose of covering classes of regularly assigned teachers. Eligible to attend school professional development on a voluntary basis.
  • Long term Substitute - Report to assigned school and teaching position if a position is projected to be vacant for more than 20 school days. Eligible to attend school professional development on a voluntary basis. 
  • Per Diem Substitute - Called on an as needed basis to cover classes in the vent of teacher absences or other building needs. Not eligible to attend school professional development. Apply directly through ESS. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction.
  • Meets and instructs assigned students in the locations and at the time designated.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Responsible for effective instruction which includes making learning goals clear to the students, using appropriate instructional and questioning techniques.
  • Responsible for using innovative approaches and instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Responsible for the promotion of high standards and expectations for student achievement and behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum standards and establishes clear objectives which reflect these standards for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Implements the district's mission, philosophy of education and instructional standards and objectives.
  • Assesses and documents the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Documents the learning problems of students and seeks the assistance of district specialists as required.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence especially as relates to the specific assignment and student grade and subject area appropriateness.
  • Attends staff meetings as required.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, colleagues, and parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of assigned students.
  • Responsible for the promotion of equity and appreciation of diversity to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning, including, for implementing specific strategies for students with special needs, with 504 plans and\or second language learners.
  • Responsible for providing equal educational opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, homelessness, religion, national origin, or disability.
  • Responsible to support students with disabilities in a general education setting.
  • Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

  1. Education Level
    • Building Substitute: Completed at least 2 years of college
    • Long Term Substitute: Possess an undergraduate degree
    • Per Diem Substitute: APPLY THROUGH ESS
  2. Ability to work with diverse population;
  3. Knowledge of MA Curriculum frameworks, curriculum, instruction, and assessment;
  4. Knowledge of differentiated instruction and response to intervention helpful
  5. Citizenship, residency or work visa required

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education teacher licensure in grade and subject area appropriate for the assignment;
  • Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement for core content teachers
  • Bilingual Spanish
  • Dual certification in ESL and/or Moderate Disabilities

 

Terms: The length of the school day is 6.5 hours, but subject to longer hours for schools with extended day. The number of school days are 185 days.

 

  • Per Diem Substitute - $125/day (increases to $150/day after 90 work days or 15 consecutive days in the same class)
  • Building Substitute - $185/day
  • Long term substitute - $230/day
  • Per Diem, Building Sub, and Long Term Sub Positions:
    • Eligible for health insurance and dental benefits.
    • Opportunity to become a full-time teacher or para with additional benefits.
