What are the responsibilities and job description for the Truancy Officer position at DISTRICT WIDE?
General Description:
Assists with the prevention and intervention of attendance issues among students in grades K-12. The Officer will promote full day school attendance with the goal of each student being in school each day, all day where appropriate, with absences only when verified as excused by the parent/guardian, physician, or administrative authority.
Reports to: Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction
Requirements:
- Holds at least a two-year college degree relevant to education, guidance, student services or criminal justice;
- Has at least three (3) years relevant experience with prevention or intervention programs related to education support or truancy prevention/reduction;
- Demonstrates the professional and personal characteristics for working effectively with students, parents, school personnel, community and court systems; and
- Is knowledgeable of school attendance laws and regulations for the state of Vermont as they pertain to students and parents/guardians.
Job Functions:
- Identifies students at risk for truancy or school attendance problems and enforces the provisions of Vermont Statute 16 regarding compulsory attendance (§1121 to §1129).
- Uses the technology of the school to identify and contact students and families at risk of attendance problems.
- Meets with the principal, assistant principal, counselor, and/or social worker who are concerned about individual students and families.
- Makes home visits or community contacts when necessary to provide appropriate intervention in truancy matters.
- With the appropriate school principal, initiates Petition proceedings to adhere to Vermont Statutes concerning school enrollment and attendance.
- Attends all court hearings and follow-up procedures for truancy referrals.
