JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Title: PUBLIC RELATION SUPERVISOR                                                                           

 

Reports to:       Superintendent

 

Job Objective:  Promote positive public relations between the school district and the community.  Prepare and inform the public about the school district's activities, goals, and policies.  Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees.

Essential Functions

    Public Relations & Media

  • Promote positive public relations between the school district and the community.
  • Coordinate design and printing of publications (e.g., calendars, brochures, recruitment materials, holiday cards).
  • Create and disperse promotional material, videos, brochures, etc., as needed by various departments.
  • Create newsletter content, layout, and design for regular communication.
  • Develop a marketing plan to retain students and support athletics.
  • Manage media relations: respond to inquiries, draft press releases, and act as media spokesperson.
  • Serve as the district's voice in messaging to community members, staff, students, and families.
  • Build community relations by working with local and regional organizations (e.g., the City of Stow and/or Munroe Falls).
  • Oversee Public Relations Interns (Summit County ESC).
  • Work with external PR firms for messaging, projects, and communication.
  • Manage all internal and external communication materials to protect the SMFCSD brand.
  • Create and implement the district's graphics standards manual and direct staff on usage.

Technology Integration and Support

  • Serve as primary contact for tech support (help tickets, accounts, subscriptions).
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement technology-infused lessons.
  • Support and optimize instructional software and network resources for teaching and learning.
  • Administer online data platforms (e.g., DASL, ProgressBook, GradeBook, Google Admin, etc).
  • Assist families with access to online learning tools and subscriptions.
  • Serve on the Technology Committee with district leadership.
  • Manage streaming of live events and meetings.
  • Manage the district's YouTube and streaming platforms.

Web & Social Media Management

  • Lead strategic direction, design, and management of district websites and mobile apps (e.g., SchoolPointe/FinalSite).
  • Support board and department web pages to ensure consistency.
  • Oversee all district social media platforms for regular, engaging, brand-consistent content.
  • Manage content creation: graphic design, multimedia, and web page updates.
  • Compile and send communications (email/phone blasts) via ParentSquare.

Crisis Communications

? Lead the District’s crisis communications efforts, preparing and executing plans that effectively manage and mitigate public relations issues.

? Collaborate with the Operations Department, law enforcement, and officials, and act as a key advisor to the Superintendent and Cabinet during times of crisis.

? Support the development and execution of crisis communication plans to manage and mitigate risks.

? Serve as a spokesperson during crises, providing accurate and timely information to the media and the public.

? Coordinate with legal counsel to ensure appropriate messaging.

Staff Training & Development

  • Oversee the District’s branding and visual identity, ensuring consistent and effective use of the SMF School District brand across all platforms.
  • Develop and implement marketing campaigns reinforcing the District’s values and strategic priorities.
  • Develop and conduct workshops on effective communication and media interaction.
  • Provide professional development activities that promote positive school-community relationships and timely communications.
  • Conduct professional development (internal and external) on technology and leadership.
  • Provide training as part of new staff induction.
  • Develop, plan, and communicate NEOnet sessions and NEOTech conference opportunities.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff for technology-related PD.
  • Attend local and national technology director meetings.

Strategic Planning & Budgeting

  • Design and implement a 5-year Public Relations Strategic Plan.
  • Collaborate with Tech Coordinator to develop a 5-year Technology Strategic Plan.
  • Develop district-wide tech standards aligned with ISTE.
  • Oversee department budget in collaboration with the Technology Coordinator.
  • Support managing internal events, such as Convocation, State of the Schools, town hall meetings, forums, etc.
  • Serve on committees making district-wide decisions related to technology.
  • Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and media coverage.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on communication outcomes and media impact.
  • Continuously improve communication practices based on feedback and performance data.

 Equipment Operated

Any pertinent equipment to the foregoing job description and the ability to learn all new and upcoming technology.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education/Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field preferred; Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience: Five years of experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field
  • Proven experience as a speechwriter for executives and senior leaders.
  • Experience with research and writing projects that address large audiences.

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in writing, editing, and public speaking.
  • Familiarity with new and emerging media and their marketing use
  • Thorough knowledge of media operations and public relations functions.
  • Expertise with desktop publishing software.
  • Evidence of working collaboratively in a professional setting. 
  • Promotes multiple problem-solving methods, identifying more efficient strategies and generalizing principles to various applications.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior, including discretion, judgment, and integrity.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
  • Able to work successfully with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  • Suited for situations that require the ability to plan yet remain flexible enough to adapt to new situations or react to emergencies
  • Suited for conditions that require the ability to interact well with other people but also the ability to work independently
  • Experience with leading district-wide technology initiatives is preferred.

 
Additional Working Conditions

  • May require travel, both daily and overnight
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as duties require.
  • Must have superior communication and organizational skills, negotiation skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must perform duties and responsibilities under stressful conditions while maintaining composure.

 

Contract Length

  • 204 days
