Summary of Job Duties :

The individual will work in field and laboratory research in close association with researchers at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro (ASU) and the USDA-ARS Delta Water Management Research Unit (DWMRU) located at ASU and under the direction of administration or academic faculty. The project primarily focuses on field and laboratory research studies on improved crop management practices that can sustain yields and protect the environment in the Lower Mississippi River Delta. Work will include support for on-farm trials and laboratory research to evaluate the impacts of innovative agricultural irrigation methods, cropping systems, and emerging conservation technologies in the Arkansas Delta. This research focus on quantification of greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient uptake, soil nutrient availability, and yield and quality metrics and assessment of crop response to climate-smart cropping management. Findings from this research will sustain and help make crop production in the Mid-South more resilient to fluctuations in climate and water use availability.

The successful candidate will be responsible performing laboratory, greenhouse, and field collection of soil, water, gas and plant data in the assessment of smart-climate management practices in irrigated row crop production from agricultural production. Duties to include but not limited to : field collection of greenhouse gas samples from field research sites in commercial agricultural fields in eastern Arkansas, performance of lab processing of samples at ASU. Job duties will include maintenance of field and lab research equipment including recording and updating documentation of field and laboratory procedures and modifications. Candidate will follow standard chemical and physical guidelines that employ best laboratory practices and appropriate safety procedures. Data management responsibilities will include data collection and management and statistical analysis.

The candidate must be experienced in field and laboratory research methods. The individual will prepare technical reports and present results at lab meetings and supervisor-approved scientific conferences. The individual must work with the UADA and / or Division mission activities.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with three years of relevant professional experience or a Master’s degree in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

MS in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, Environmental Sciences or closely related fields. The successful candidate will have experience in soil nutrient analyses, crop yield and quality component analysis, and greenhouse gas analysis including greenhouse gas flux calculations. Candidate must have valid Driver’s license and be able to operate trucks pulling trailers, and lift 50 lb water bottles, and operate 4-wheelers (side-by-side field vehicles) in agricultural fields.
