ESL Teacher
Pay Grade: Teacher Scale
Period of Employment: 10 Month FLSA Status: Exempt
Supervised by and/or Reports to: Executive Director of Instruction and Professional Learning Location: Division-Wide General Responsibilities: Provides tailored instruction of foundational skills in English, literacy and numeracy, and foundational content area skills to a diverse, multilevel group of students who have little to no English skills within the Colonial Beach School District. |

Essential Responsibilities:
· Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meet the needs, interests and abilities of students. · On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated. · Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enable each student to achieve learning objectives. · Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students. · Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior. · Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students. · Establish learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of curriculum framework and knowledge of human growth and development. · Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives. · Take all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. · Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, CBPS policy and administrative regulation. · Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. · Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms. · Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual. · Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers. · Appraise his/her own effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence. · Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program. · Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required. · Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor. |
Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to English as a Second Language and of the concepts, principles and methodologies of ESL instruction · Working knowledge of current curriculum development, program implementation, learning theory and recent research in ESL. · Working skill in the use of technology to deliver and assess instruction · Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments; to train and advise teaching staff regarding ESL students; to communicate effectively, orally and in writing · Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning · Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication · Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community members · Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups

Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects may be required. |
