Position: Speech & Language Pathologist

 

Position Summary: Responsible for organizing and implementing a therapy program to meet the needs of speech. language and hearing impaired students and meeting the duties of teaching and service delivery as outlined in laws and policies. 

 

Job Type: Full-Time

Contract: 10 Month

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree Valid Virginia certification in field or hold appropriate state license for the position

Desired qualifications:  Certificate of clinical competence

 

Essential Functions: 

 

  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring students suspected and identified as having speech and language impairments.
  • Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, fluency, and language impairments.
  • Provides screening to identify speech and/or language impaired children at regular intervals and at specified levels.
  • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.    
  • Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and correct     
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members so as to implement therapy using the    
  • Provides information, support, and training to parents and families when appropriate.    
  • Provides staff development and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech and/or language improvement.    
  • Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided    
  • Maintains lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies,     
  • Compiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early     
  • Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.    
  • Completes the necessary paperwork on students that qualify for Medicaid reimbursement.    
  • Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary assessment team for a child who has been referred for services    
  • Follows and complies with state, federal, and local guidelines in writing IEP’s and complying with other state reports
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Thorough knowledge of the subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of primary, elementary, middle, high school or special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school system rules, regulations and procedures; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.

 

Special Requirements: 

 

Education and Experience:

Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
