Dixon Family Ymca in Dixon, IL is looking for one ymca lifeguard to join our 87 person strong team. We are located on 110 N. Galena Avenue. Our ideal candidate is self-driven, ambitious, and hard-working.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with the YMCA Mission Statement and purpose of the policies of the Dixon Family YMCA, the Lifeguard will be responsible for the safety, and well-being of participants in aquatic activities in the pool area. Lifeguards will firmly, fairly and tactfully enforce all pool rules, regulations and policies; they will be aware of and promote the YMCA programs and philosophy. Furthermore, the lifeguard will be responsible for pool readings, cleanliness and neatness of the pool area, attending staff meetings, aquatic training sessions, and attending YMCA certification institutes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This position requires an aquatic background including current certifications in YMCA Lifeguarding and Red Cross Lifeguarding, as well as CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and Oxygen Administration for the Lay Rescuer (O2). Staff will complete a YMCA Crossover Certification within 90 days of hire date, if not already YMCA Lifeguard certified. The Lifeguard must be knowledgeable of all rules and regulations related to the use of aquatic facilities in accordance with the Dixon Family Aquatic Handbook. Dependability and promptness are necessary, as well as the ability to present a mature, professional and personable image. When on duty, guards will be neat, well-groomed and properly attired. All applicants must successfully complete the pre-employment Lifeguard Skill Evaluation and attend a minimum of 6 posted employment in-services. Lifeguards are also responsible for maintaining their certifications.

 

 

Specific Job Tasks

 

Exemplify, through both job responsibility and daily living, that physical fitness and mental well-being are conditions that will be achieved and maintained.

 

Guarantee the safety and well-being of aquatic participants through preventive lifeguarding, by being alert and aware of potential danger areas.

 

At all times, enforce prescribed safety procedures and rules of good behavior and courtesy to ensure a safe and pleasant pool environment for participants.

 

Be knowledgeable of the policies and programs of the Branch Aquatic Program; be effective and tactful with members as presented in Member Service Training and the YMCA Mission Statement.

 

Greet and give directions to all pool participants in a warm and friendly manner.

 

Maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance while on duty. Wear required identifiable equipment when on duty: swim suit, lifeguard t-shirt or tank, whistle, fanny pack, and rescue tube. Lifeguards are expected to purchase/replace any lost or forgotten items. A rescue tube will be worn in the required position at all times.

 

Follow established positions for correct pool guarding; position yourself to view the entire pool areas easily; pay special attention to small children and new participants who may not be familiar with the facility; and do not assume any activity that would take your eyes off the viewing of all pools.

 

Know and follow correct procedures for handling emergencies and accidents as practiced in staff trainings.

 

Complete and maintain accurate records as necessary, including pool usage counts, incident reports, and pool readings.

 

Be accountable for keeping your certifications up-to-date.

 

Follow pool opening and closing procedures as stated in the Aquatics Handbook. Remain on duty until relieved by another Certified Lifeguard. Never leave the area unguarded. All doors should be locked and secure when closing the pool.

 

Keep pool area neat by placing all pool equipment out of the path of traffic, and immediately reporting to maintenance any unclean or hazardous area.

 

Keep an accurate and up-to-date timecard.

 

Attend department and staff meetings as required.

 

Uphold and exemplify the principles of the YMCA Member Service Program.

 

Be knowledgeable about the pool; i.e., depth, dimensions, scheduling, temperatures, etc., by reviewing pool notations, pool reports, and pool schedules when coming on duty.

 

Assume all other duties and assignments as deemed appropriate by the Aquatic Director.

 

19. Conduct yourself as a professional rescuer and model proper behavior at all times. No reading, homework, telephone calls, cell phones, iPod, or conversations/activities that will take your attention away from the pool.

 

Physical Demands:

1.    Remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness.

 

2.    Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair.

 

3.   Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair.

 

4.   Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively with emergency personnel over the telephone and in person.

 

5.   Hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment, including in water, understanding that significant background noise exists in aquatic environments.

 

6.   Observe all assigned sections of the water area.

 

7.   Perform all needed rescues and survival skills.

 

8.   Think in abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember.

 

9.   Operate alone as a lifeguard, without other lifeguard for support.
