Purpose of Job
Peer tutors help students review/clarify course content and develop study skills. Tutors work with students on an individual or small group basis. Tutors also have the option of conducting test review sessions or group sessions for larger groups.
General Description and Duties
Peer tutors are required to keep contact records for each of their tutoring sessions. Significant communication occurs via email for both the client/tutor interaction and tutor/supervisor interaction, and so consistent checking of your email and responding to correspondence via email is required.
Special Skills or Knowledge Required
- Sophomore Standing
- 3.00 Cumulative GPA
- Recommendation of course instructor/department faculty
- At least a B in any course they are interested in tutoring for
- Tutor salary cannot exceed the financial aid ceiling for those receiving federal aid
- Participation in training sessions throughout the semester
- Ability to keep student information confidential
Application process

- Once an application is received, the tutor coordinator will check your academic records to ensure GPA requirements and specific course grade requirements are met.
- Applicants must attend one interview session.
- If the tutor coordinator decides to move forward with your application, official hiring will be pending until recommendations from professors are received by the tutor coordinator.
Once hired, you will participate in a three-part, paid training program:
- First, you must attend mandatory leadership training on Sunday, April 27, 2025
- Second, there are four online modules that go over tutoring basics, tutoring ethics, communication techniques, and learning strategies. This training is provided through Knack and is designed in accordance with CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) Level 1 standards.
- Third, you will meet with the tutor coordinator to go over expectations regarding documentation, Doane specific client experience, and Academic Success Center expectations.
Total Weekly Hours Required
Variable - typically 2-6 hours per week. $13.50 per hour
