This is a unique technical research position that will work with experts within Dolby Laboratories as well as with experts in other organizations worldwide to create new and exciting opportunities. Technical acumen and clear communication will be critical for candidates to leverage for success with the opportunity below.

Job Summary:

As a Senior Researcher in Neural Video Processing, you will play a key role in advancing the future of video coding. You will leverage your expertise in neural video compression and processing technology to drive innovation within Dolby’s video codec R&D team. Your work will involve researching and developing cutting-edge technologies at the intersection of deep learning, video compression, and processing.

A strong background in deep learning applied to image and video processing is essential. Familiarity with video coding standards (AVC, HEVC, VVC, etc.) is a plus. Your ability to balance computational complexity with picture quality will inform key decisions. In this role, you will develop new algorithms, build proof-of-concept prototypes, and evaluate end-to-end system performance.

We are looking for candidates with expertise in video and image processing, machine learning, or computer vision, as well as strong software design, problem-solving, and debugging skills. You will collaborate with a skilled and motivated team to research and develop advanced video processing technologies that enhance the quality, efficiency, and capabilities of video coding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and contribute to the development of competitive technologies in deep learning video compression.
  • Understand system requirements and the contexts in which new technologies will be applied.
  • Develop early-stage conceptual models to test feasibility.
  • Document and present new algorithms and implementations through standards contributions, patent applications, conference and journal publications, technical presentations, and white papers.
  • Represent Dolby’s technology interests in industry associations or standards bodies, as appropriate.
  • Uphold high technical and ethical standards in all professional activities.

Required Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in developing algorithms for deep learning video compression or other machine learning systems.
  • Strong expertise in deep learning (DL) and statistical machine learning (ML).
  • Extensive programming experience in Python/C/C , particularly for image/video coding and processing; proficiency with PyTorch is required.
  • Proven research accomplishments, including published papers and/or patent applications in video coding and processing.
  • Experience in filing patents for new technologies is a plus.
  • Prior participation in standardization activities and experience drafting and defending contributions is beneficial.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally and adept in working with colleagues in different time zones.

The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $165,000 to $227,000, which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and some roles may also include equity. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
