Position Summary

The grant writer serves as a staff member at will of Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS). The grant writer provides professional grant-writing services to the agency. With the assistance of the Chief Financial Officer, work toward stable agency funding through an increased donor base, capital contribution campaign, and planned giving program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Priority 1 : Equity and Inclusion

Priority 2 – Grant Writing and Research

  • Responsible for compiling, writing, and editing grant applications. Must exhibit strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
  • Responsible for developing individual grant proposals in accordance with grantors preferences and guidelines. This includes seeking DVIS data from the appropriate departments and utilizing data in applications and in goal setting.
  • Responsible for researching grant-making organizations and analyzing them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs.
  • Responsible for assisting in the maintenance of archived files of grant research, grant applications (including refusals), and administration and distribution of grants that were approved.
  • Responsible for working with the Chief Financial Officer and program staff to match program suggestions and goals with grant opportunities. Convert ideas into workable funding opportunities.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining a “program needs” list of current and proposed agency programs that require funding. Research and pursue funding opportunities for these programs.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing grant acquisition strategies - both initial application and renewal.
  • Responsible for working with Chief Financial Officer and Administration to match budget requirements to funding opportunities.
  • Priority 3 – Monitoring and Reporting

  • Responsible for supplying progress reports when required by a grant-making organization for the funded project(s) or program(s).
  • Responsible for monitoring existing grants and submitting renewal or extension applications.
  • Priority 4 – Relationship Building / Collaboration

  • Responsible for keeping in contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application and supplying additional supportive material as requested.
  • Organize, attend, and participate in community collaborations leading to the development of funding and program resources for DVIS.
  • Provide training to new staff on grant management and reporting requirements.
  • Job Requirements / Experience

    Education : Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or Communications is required, or in a related field or any equivalent combination of education and / or experience.

    Experience : Requires a minimum of 2 years’ experience in grant writing or other similar experience; experience working with a nonprofit strongly preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and / or special skills.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite is necessary.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with social justice issues, specifically intimate partner and gender-based domestic and sexual violence, and racial, class, gender, sexual orientation issues, and intervention / prevention services strongly preferred.
  • Requires dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks.
  • Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, with frequent pressure related to meeting deadlines and scheduling requirements.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must have good negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with diplomacy.
  • Strong writing ability, with demonstrated awareness about different genres of writing and writing for different audiences.

    Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.

    Experience collecting and researching data.

    Experience with calculating figures and working with numbers.

    Experience working proactively while balancing a variety of priorities and workloads.

    Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritizing work appropriately.

    Schedule Availability : Monday through Friday, 8 : 30 am to 5 : 00 pm. Occasional extended workdays.
