What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ob/Gyn Medical Coder/Biller position at Dominion Women's Health, Inc.?
Primary duties will include evaluating cases to determine principal diagnosis and procedure, as well as pertinent additional diagnosis and procedure when required. Entering charges into electronic health record system, processing claims (paper and EMC), balancing journals, answering phones, & creating payment plans. Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA regulations. This position requires work on-site at the practice daily.
Employment Qualifications:
- Medical Coder with 2 years of experience or 4 years of experience coding without certification preferred.
- Ob/Gyn coding experience preferred
- HIPAA Compliance knowledge
- A detailed knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding and classification system is required as is a working knowledge of medical terminology and its applications.
- The ability to read and comprehend coding publications and apply new knowledge to correct coding practices is key.
- Knowledge of medical insurance billing and claims management with various payers.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, co-workers and other departments.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with accuracy & little supervision.
- Basic knowledge of Google Office products, office equipment, and accurate data entry skills.
- Must be willing to submit to a background investigation, including for example, verification of your past employment, criminal history, and educational background.
- Effective verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
- Critical thinking skills, ability to identify, recommend and implement action plans to resolve issues.
Essential Job Functions:
- Managing claim denials with various payers to achieve 100% payment on valid charges
- Clarifying information or diagnosis by communicating with healthcare providers
- Utilizing computer software to analyze data
- Identifies problems both proactively and retrospectively, recommends corrective action and communicates effectively with supervisor, administration and providers to implement solutions
- Coordinate/review the work of designated employees. Ensure quality and quantity of work performed through regular audits
- Continuously strives for improvement
- Review medical record documentation and accurately code the primary/secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding conventions. Sequence the diagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines. Ensure assignment is accurate. Abstract and compile data from medical records for appropriate optimal reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges
- Verifying signatures
- Verifying medical data in patient electronic health record
- Consult with and educate physicians on coding practices and conventions in order to provide detailed coding information. Communicate with nursing and ancillary services personnel for needed documentation for accurate coding
- Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes and surgical techniques through participation in continuing education programs to effectively apply ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding guidelines to inpatient and outpatient diagnoses and procedures
- Maintain a thorough understanding of medical record practices, standards, regulations, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO), Health Care/Finance Administration (HCFA), Medical Review of Virginia (MRVA), etc.
- Answering the phones, assist patients with billing and insurance questions, creating payment arrangements with patients, assisting front desk with insurance and balance related questions
- Other duties as assigned
Other Job Functions:
- Assist with special projects as required.
- Maintains appropriate back-up files and archives information as required for future retrieval
- Participate in staff and educational meetings
Computer or Equipment to be operated:
- Fax machine, copier, computer (Intergy, Intergy EHR, Internet, Microsoft Word, Google), telephone, calculator.
Working Conditions:
- Works in both office and patient care environments where there are few physical discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like. The incumbent must have the ability to access various areas of the office in order to perform the essential functions of the position.
- May be required to lift up to 20 pounds on occasion
