Swim Team Employment Application
We are seeking friendly, experienced swim coaches for the summer of 2025 to provide a summer of fun, competition, and comprehensive swim instruction to swimmers of all levels. As a part of our coaching staff, you will help swimmers achieve their swimming goals, promote an inclusive atmosphere in which everyone feels welcome, and contribute to a fun summer experience.
The swim team consists of three groups for swimmers depending on their ability: Thundersquad Prep (TSP), Thundersquad (TS), and Thunderbolts (TB). TSP swimmers are the team-in-training, typically 5-6 years old who are learning swim basics. TS swimmers are the junior team, typically 5-8 years old who can swim the length of the pool unassisted but are still learning strokes. TB swimmers are the main team, who know freestyle and backstroke and can swim laps consistently for 30 minutes.
Swim Coach Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor swimmers and enforce pool safety rules at all times
- Coach swimmers in age/experience-appropriate swim techniques and help them refine their skills
- Engage with swimmers to keep them interested, learning, and having fun
- Encourage, actively participate in, and contribute to an environment of good sportsmanship and team spirit
- Assist with swim meet and team event logistics, as needed
- Perform administrative tasks as required
- Work cooperatively with other coaches and team representatives
Swim Coach Requirements / Expectations
- Availability to attend all practices, unless otherwise approved by head coaches
- Experience in swimming
- Familiarity with current Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) rules
- Ability to engage with swimmers in a motivating and friendly way
- SafeSport certification (to be completed prior to the beginning of the season)
- Lifeguard certification (to be completed prior to the beginning of the season)
Other Important Information
- Applications must be filled out by the applicant (not a parent)

- The application deadline for returning staff is March 1st and for new staff is March 15th.
- The DRRA swim season runs from approximately May 12 - July 15, with a limited number of coaches needed for the two weeks ending July 26.
- Pre-Season (while APS is in session): No TSP; TB practices begin May 12 (3:30pm to 6pm), TS begins May 20
- Summer Season: all groups begin June 19; 7:30am to 11:15am
- Monday evening meets begin June 9 (4pm to 9pm)
- Saturday morning meets begin June 14 (7am to 12 noon)

Available Positions (minimum age by May 4, 2025)
- Junior Assistant Head Coach, minimum age 17
- Thunderbolt Coach, minimum age 16
- Thundersquad / TSP Coach, minimum age 15
