SUMMARY
Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated location.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
EXPERIENCE:
No experience required
Clean driving record required
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B)
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass alcohol and drug test.
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of student discipline procedure.
- Ability to manage student behavior.
- Ability to drive bus.
- Ability to use safety equipment (flares, reflective signals), and fire extinguisher.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Vehicle Operation
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
- Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
Student Management
- Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
- Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
Safety
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
Other
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Participate in staff meetings and special events as assigned.
- Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work, meetings, and appointments.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to write and speak simple sentences.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic math operations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.
While performing the duties of this job, continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions are required. Specific vision abilities require close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. This position required meeting deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and staff, and enduring irregular or extended work hours.
The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works outside and inside; and may experience moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud, to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
