What are the responsibilities and job description for the Organ Recovery Surgeon position at Donor Alliance, Inc.?

Donor Alliance is hiring an Organ Recovery Surgeon in Denver! The Organ Recovery Surgeon is responsible for the surgical recovery of donor organs for transplantation, education, and/or research in the operative setting. This position leads the operative environment in collaboration with the organ recovery surgical staff, donor hospital staff, and others who participate in the recovery process. The Organ Recovery Surgeon collaborates with internal and external resources to develop and promote practices that increase the number of decedent organs recovered for transplantation. In the absence of the CMO, may be asked to serve as the designee. At all times, the Organ Recovery Surgeon is expected to support the mission of the organization and the vision to maximize all donation opportunities.
Day-To-Day
  • Available a minimum of 20 on-call days each month, including some weekends. An on-call day shall be defined as a 24 hour period.
    • Extensive travel within DSA to donor hospitals both by vehicle and aircraft is required.
    • Facilitates organ recovery in a timely manner, meeting the OPO and hospital needs for recovery times.
  • Responsible for organ recovery procedures, both Donation after Brain Death (DBD) donors and
Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) donors, ensuring that the organ recovery process meets and/or exceeds national standards and organizational standard operating policies and procedures for donation and transplantation.
  • Recovers or assists in the recovery of heart valves for transplant and any organs for research when requested.
  • Assists in managing the donor hospital organ recovery process by collaborating with hospital staff in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Responsible for performing organ biopsies and facilitating the interpretation of organ biopsies by donor hospital or other pathologists to determine suitability when biopsy requested.
  • Responsible for inspecting the abdominal cavity for abnormalities that necessitate pathological evaluation.
  • Responsible for overseeing and participating in kidney cannulation as needed for kidney pulsatile preservation.
  • Provides and documents an accurate and verifiable description of organ anatomy to include assessment of quality, anatomical abnormalities and surgical damage.
  • Participates in verification of organ labeling to ensure accuracy and safety in accordance with standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Assists the Organ Recovery staff in perfusion and preservation, including participation in periodic post-recovery debrief with surgical recovery staff to promote education, best practices and process improvement.
  • Works closely with Organ Recovery Specialist staff to ensure best practices in organ preservation including in situ and ex-situ device perfusion (examples include- normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), Transmedics, OrganOx)
  • Provides education in anatomy and organ recovery techniques.
  • In the absence of the CMO, may be required to serve as the designee for the medical director.
  • Meet regularly with local and regional key abdominal center surgeons to develop/maintain peer relationships.
  • Participates in meetings of the Advisory Board and provide procurement and perfusion related content
  • Maintains confidentiality of donor and recipient information according to established policies and procedures.
  • Provides input into surgical recovery practices for the organization.
  • In concert with the CMO, leads the research activities for the organization.
  • May perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
Qualifications
  • A Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), board certified in general surgery with current licensure, or equivalent work experience foreign or domestic. .
  • Minimum three years’ experience as a surgeon performing Donation after Brain Death (DBD) and Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) organ recoveries or transplant operations in the United States
  • Licensed physician in the state of Colorado and/or Wyoming with an unrestricted and unlimited license to practice medicine preferred.
  • Ability to work with all levels of personnel in various health care settings required.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated accuracy, organizational skills, integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer equipment and software, including but not limited to, Windows environment (Intermediate skills) required.
Compensation:
  • $350,000 (experience considered), exempt (not eligible for overtime)
Additional Compensation:
  • Variable Pay Bonus Plan, per plan document
