POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Anesthesia Provider must be dedicated to supporting the mission of the DNWest to save and improve lives through organ and tissue donation for transplantation. The Anesthesia Provider is responsible for the overall provision of anesthesia support during procurement of organs from deceased donors for transplantation, medical research, and education. These duties typically include donor management during organ recovery, coordination of organ recovery and preservation, and implementing, and monitoring policies, procedures, strategies, and action plans related to maximizing the gift of donation. This position requires a proactive team player who must uphold the core values of the organization, which include passion, excellence, relationships, and equity and inclusion.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Activities/Anesthesia Administration
  • The Anesthesia Provider must provide consistent and timely service to hospitals, transplant coordinators, transplant surgeons, operating room staff and recovery technicians in deceased organ donor recoveries. The Anesthesia Provider must also possess knowledge of medical and legal principles of donor evaluation, authorization, management, and allocation. This is necessary to effectively communicate with physicians and hospital staff involved in organ recovery.
  • Assumes responsibilities for all aspects of donor evaluation and management during the operative period including review of donor flow sheet; assessment of hemodynamic stability and implementation of strategies to maintain and/or improve specific organ function; may be required to administer medications as requested by the transplant teams to complete the procedure and maintain organ perfusion.
  • Accepts “on call” responsibilities and responds to scheduled organ recoveries appropriately both at DNWest Donor Recovery Inter-Facility Transfer (DRIFT), or at donor hospitals.
  • Accurately communicates donor status to other transplant professionals. Coordinates this care with DNWest staff, donor hospital staff, recovery surgeons, and consulting physicians to ensure optimal organ recovery.
  • Maintains concise, accurate records of anesthesia course and completes DNWest paperwork along with donor hospital records as required. Maintains accurate documentation of laboratory values, medications, hemodynamic monitoring, and any unusual events or problems that occur during the provision of anesthesia.
  • Participates in the further development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to organ recovery.
  • Understands and complies with DNWest policies and procedures especially those that relate to organ recoveries. Adheres to quality assurance procedures established within the organization.
  • Consults with the Medical Director and/or Administrator on Call for problems that occur that pertain to the clinical and technical aspects of quality organ recovery.
  • Assists with training and orientation of new coordinators as needed. Assists with core competencies for line placement of transplant coordinators as requested.
  • When “onsite” to provide anesthesia support to brain dead donors, may be required to place central lines, arterial lines, pulmonary artery lines, perform bronchoscopies, or review chest x-rays as necessary.


Other Clinical Responsibilities
  • Assists with orientation of anesthesia providers including a thorough review of DNWest ’s intraoperative responsibilities and/or onsite shadowing.
  • Participates in DNWest reviews and educational opportunities as required to advance care of the donor and advancement of staff.
  • Develops and reviews protocols for donor OR management to enhance organ recovery and organ utility. To the extent possible, assists with implementation of such protocols when anesthesia is provided by staff from the donor hospital.
  • Develops and maintains communication with transplant centers and surgeons in an effort to ensure positive outcomes.
  • Participates in research projects as requested.
  • Participates in donor case reviews with a goal of increasing organ utilization and organ quality.
  • Functions as a resource to the Clinical Operations Manager (COM) and Clinical Transplant Coordinator (CPC) teams.  Responsible to review all donor cardiac arrests and provide the COM and CPC teams with clinical assessment/process improvement considerations.  Works with the VP of Organ Operations and COM roles to improve and advance clinical management protocols.  


General
  • Demonstrates effective public speaking skills.
  • Participates in educational/training opportunities such as working with Hospital Development staff to develop and present OR in-services for donor hospitals as requested.
  • Takes an active interest in increasing knowledge base in areas which pertain to improving hospital services/development.
  • Maintains and actively seeks to advance knowledge base of end stage organ failure, organ recovery, donor maintenance, transplantation, patient outcomes, and organ preservation through appropriate organizations and attendance at education seminars.
  • Seeks guidance from clinical staff and management to assess and improve own job performance.


Other/Administrative
  • Maintains complete and accurate business and expense records as required.
  • Maintains professional working relationship and rapport with management, medical, nursing and ancillary staffs, both within and outside DNWest. Works to resolve issues as needed.
  • Maintains an adequate proficiency level with the use of office equipment to enable completion of assigned duties (i.e., fax, computers, printers, copiers, etc.).
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills that will allow role to deal effectively with individuals or a group of individuals, particularly a variety of medical professionals.
  • Requires strong written and verbal communication skills as well as an ability to work productively with a team and independently.
  • Working knowledge of office equipment, including but not limited to word processor or personal computer, Microsoft Office 2000 or higher, fax machine, calculator, photocopier, portable telephone/personal digital assistant, printer and of slide and overhead projectors.
  • Reliable automotive transportation required.


EDUCATION
  • Required: Graduation from an accredited MD or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) program.
  • Preferred: Training in an approved anesthesia program.


EXPERIENCE
  • Required: Graduation from an accredited Medical Doctor (MD) or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) program.
  • Preferred: Training in an approved anesthesia program.
  • Preferred: Experience in providing anesthesia support during deceased organ recoveries.


Certification/License:
  • Required: Current California MD, CRNA licensure, valid driver’s license and current vehicle insurance based on state’s minimum insurance coverage standards.


Other:
  • The Anesthesia Provider must also maintain competencies with current anesthesia practices in order to provide superior donor management during organ recoveries.  He/she must be able to establish appropriate priorities, handle stressful situations in a calm manner, and use discretion at all times.  
  • The Anesthesia Provider must be compassionate, conscientious and ethical, and must possess strong interpersonal skills that will allow him/her to deal effectively with individuals or a group of individuals, particularly a variety of medical professionals. 12 hour on call shift Friday - Sunday and Holidays- $280 per shift

Case Work 
Active case work DRIFT Case - $1500 per case
